Boathouse Farewell OPEN DAY Saturday 9th October. by Matt Mitchell
Last Weekend sore the end of a era as the Current Bexhill Rowing Club was being vacated for the last time. To celebrate what will become the "new era" for the Rowers, the club house was open to the public for Saturday afternoon for all to see the facilities, talk to the rowers and look at the trophies won for 2010. The event was supported by the current Mayor of Bexhill, Jimmie Carroll who attended the event. Amazed by the amount of trophies the club won, he was astonished that this was just 1 years accumulation. As part of his chosen charity (young and elderly of Sidley) his interested turned to the clubs future & plans for development for the youth. Rowing Club representative, Matt Mitchell, highlighted the clubs plans for the next 5 years which will hopefully involve further interaction with the local schools and the plan for an "inter school" regatta within this time frame. The clubs future is paramount to the youth of the town and most of the current rowers have started whilst they were still at school. This year, the club has developed nearly 20 new rowers from school who will hopefully be racing and representing the town next year. The current mens junior champions and ladies runner ups have all been part of the development of the young members of the club showing that the current programme is working . The veteran members of the club have also worked through the ranks from school age but are now well into their 40's & 50's and still actively participating and representing this fine club. It was also this development plan where the "Awesome Foursome" of Nick & Phil, Matt & Ian first learnt to row. Nick, Phil & Matt all were part of the Junior Senior four that won the coastal title back in 2006. Like many others before him, Phil first started as a coxswain for the club when he coxed his fathers senior crew back in 1994, he then teamed up with Nick, racing Novice & Junior Fours and the rest is history.
It is just over 1 year since the "Awesome Foursome" from Bexhill Rowing Club won the Indian Ocean Rowing Race in a record breaking time. Their achievement has brought the clubs attention to the public in more ways than the club could have imagined as it was still obvious that their achievement is still high in the publics eyes and recognition was still being paid to them at the weekend.
The shear volume of trophies won this year means that no other club along the South Coast has won this amount of trophies in a single year and, as noted by the area Coaching & Development Team Leader from British Rowing (England's Rowing Governing Body) Paul Lorenzato, this is probably the most successful club in the UK. As Development Officer, Paul visits all the clubs including those on the Thames and has never seen such a fine display of trophies at a single club. Paul is helping with the development of the club and will be ensuring that, over the coming years, the club delivers against its promise to encourage the youth of the town to participate in sport, especially rowing.
It has truly been a remarkable year and the club wanted to celebrate with the public. It was also a great chance for the club to thank all those who have followed & supported the club over the years and especially this record breaking year. The day was funded by the rowers themselves as a big thank you to everyone and to celebrate, a firework display was also planned for the evening. The club normally savor boat burning for bonfire night, but as this was a special occasion, it was agreed to "blow up" one of the old boats that had reached the end of its useful life. As the fireworks drew to a close, the boat was dually sent to "rowing heaven" in a spectacular ball of fire.
Graham Dawes, Rowing Club Chairman, had the honor of closing & locking the doors for the last time as a rowing club member. The club is due to be demolished over the coming weeks as part of the development of the seafront and the new facilities are due to be ready around July next year, hopefully in time for the clubs annual regatta on 3rd July. Training still continues at the usual times of Tuesday / Thursday evenings from 6pm but at Bexhill College, and Sunday Mornings at Wallers Haven. Those who are wishing to try out rowing are requested to contact the rowers at the college or visit the website
www.bexhillrowingclub.com .
The Club is still working towards the £70k required for the refurbishment of the club. Further sponsored events are still being planned and details will be published within our monthly newsletter which, if you wish to be added to the mailing list, please contact us at 31 Woodsgate Park, Bexhill, TN39 4DL and we will be delighted to provide the monthly news letter free of charge. All donations are still to be sent to the address above which are going 100% towards the new club house.
On behalf of the Bexhill Rowing Club, we would like to thank all those who attend our open day and those who have supported our club over the years. We trust that your support will help over the next 6-8 months whilst we try to rebuild the club and hope that we can once again, make you proud of our achievements.

Jemma takes honours for Bexhill Rowing Club
22 Members of Bexhill Rowing Club headed down to the West Country to race at the 2010 South Coast Rowing Championships at Wimbleball last Saturday. Racing over a 2000m course, the club had 3 championship crews & 4 open event crews all biding to be Champions in their own events. Crews from Herne Bay in Kent, to Falmouth in Cornwall all race at this “once a year” event. With the Bexhill club heading up the tables for the Coastal division for the 2010 record breaking season, hopes were high for another superb regatta. Due to the lack of rain over the summer, the lake was reduced in level by over 5m. This caused the course to go from a straight 2k, to an “S” shape course which favoured crews depending on their lane draw.
The first final of the day saw the 2010 Junior Ladies four runner up crew of Claire Hosie, Vinnie Hourihane, Sophia Green, Eloise Hunt and cox Phil McCorry race in their championship race. Winning races at Dartmouth Royal & Oxford City Royal Regatta, the crew were on a high and had great hopes for pulling of a win. The ladies had a battle on their hands from the word go with the crew from Lymington edging out a slight lead within 50m. Pushing hard up to the 1st bend, the ladies edged into a very slight lead only for Lymington to regain the lead after the bend. Not wanting to relinquish all their hard work, the ladies kept within striking distance of Lymington right up to the finish line. Unable to find that last extra gear, the ladies finished a very creditable 2nd place beating their Coastal rivals by a massive margin.
Next up was the Open Veteran 40+ crew of Glen Payne, Steve Hopkins, Steve Bickers & Andy Bickers. As with the ladies, they too found themselves behind of the start and chasing a crew from Bideford. Unfortunately, they were unable to gain any ground but finished in 2nd place.
Racing well in the heats, both Jemma Cropper & Nick McCorry produced fine performances to secure places in the finals of their sculling races. Nick McCorry managed an excellent 4th place in the Mens novice scull.
The highly anticipated Mens Senior Championship Race for the Bideford Bowl had the 2010 Championship crew of Kieran Cahill, Matt Hellier, Joe Guppy, Mark Mitchell & Cox Rachael Garland. Lining up on the start line, the crews only real rivals for the race was the crew from BTC Southampton. Unknown in a river boat, this crew posed the greatest threat to the Bexhill Men securing the “Bowl” for the 4th time. As expected, both these crews streaked ahead from the field to take an early lead. Both crews matched each other stroke for stroke over the 1st 1200m up to the 1st bend. BTC then pushed with the bend in their favour which gave them a slight lead. Not letting them get away, the Bexhill crew still matching them stroke for stroke maintained their boat speed to stay in touch. With the final bend approaching and the last 400m, Bexhill throw everything at the BTC crew to stay in touch but were unable to gain the advantage losing by just 1 length. The pace of both crews showed as neither were able to move from the finish line for some time after the race.
Following this epic race was the 2010 Mens Junior Champions of Greg Anderson, Dan Renner, Tom Holic, Ben Slatter & Cox Rachael Garland. As with the Mens race, the crew had beaten many of their rivals throughout their lead up to the champs and were racing for the win. Taking a slight lead at the 1200m mark with Dart Totnes right with them, the crew pushed around the bend to try and extend the lead. Dart Totnes were not going to let Bexhill away and had their own push to ease out in front of Bexhill with 500m to go. Pushing hard for the line, both Dart Totnes & Bexhill were then joined by Christchurch in a sprint for the line. Unfortunately, Bexhill had nothing left as they put their “all in” to try and keep with the others. Dart Totnes eventually won with Bexhill 3rd.
The Final race of the day had the Mens Senior Open crew of Matt Mitchell, Ashley Cahill, Joe Pellett, Doug Holdaway & Cox Jess Campbell. With an easy heat, the crew breezed into the final where they faced 4 runner up crews from Hants / Dorset who were hoping to get into the championship race. An un-easy start left the Bexhill crew behind from the start. Gaining ground by half way, they managed to get themselves into 5th place. With less than 500m to go, the leading crews edged out a further lead which the Bexhill crew were unable to claw back finishing 5 lengths behind the winning crew.
Prior to the Senior Four race, Jemma Cropper had here Senior B sculls final. Lining up next to Jemma were more experienced scullers from clubs such as Shoreham and Christchurch. Having narrowly missed out on retaining her Senior Pair championship earlier on in the year with Rachael Garland, Jemma was aiming to finish the year on a high. Pushing from the start, Jemma eased out a lead which, by half way, gave her chance to settle in to a smooth rhythm to increase her lead. Jemma pulled away from the field and won Bexhill’s only race of the day by 5-6 lengths. Such was the performance of the crews from the Hants / Dorset division, that Jemma’s performance was boosted by the fact that there was only 1 other Coastal Crew to win on the day.
The fairy tale end to this incredible season did not quite come to fruition, however, every rower & coxswain done both the club & Bexhill proud as Bexhill remained the top Coastal Club at the regatta with all crews securing races in finals and managing 1 win & 3 second places from 7 races.
The club are now preparing to move out of their existing club house and preparations are in place for the massive fundraising that is required to secure the £70k refurbishment. Details of fundraising events will be posted on the website www.bexhillrowingclub.com. A reminder to all that cheque donations need to be written out to Bexhill Rowing Club Boat House Fund and addressed to Matt Mitchell, Fund Raising Co-ordinator, 31 Woodsgate Park, Bexhill, East Sussex, TN39 4DL.
Bexhill do the double at Deal and Shoreham.
Bexhill’s rowers continued their fine performances over a double header weekend with regattas at Deal and Shoreham by taking the entire aggregate cups home with them. Over the 2 days the Bexhill Club notched up a staggering 14 wins!!
There were also two Championship places decided with Sophia Green and Claire Hosie repeating their fantastic form together this season with 2 1sts at both Deal and by an amazing 20 or more lengths over their nearest rivals at Shoreham. Echoing this were the Men’s Junior 4 of Dan Renner, Tom Hollick , Ben Slater and Greg Anderson getting the champagne treatment as they arrived back at the shore. Adding to the trophy haul winning on both days were Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill in the Senior Pairs, although the seas were far from calm the light hull of their brand new boat gave a solid performance. The Senior 4 of Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy, Matt Hellier and Kieran Cahill showed they were top crew over both days with 2 fine wins. In the Men's Junior Pairs there were two wins but by different combinations. Deal saw a great race by Ben Slater and Tom Hollick whilst at Shoreham it was Renner and Anderson's turn to take 1st. In the Men’s Senior sculls Mark Mitchell (Deal) and Kieran Cahill (Shoreham) exchanged 1st places.
The Ladies Senior Pairs of Rachel Garland and Jemma Cropper finished a close 2nd at Deal but improved the next day winning in a very exciting race at Shoreham. The Ladies Junior 4's of Hosie, Green, Eloise Hunt and Emma Jane Hunt narrowly missed out on the championship with a 2nd at Deal and 3rd at Shoreham, unfortunately the holiday season meant crew changes which affected their overall performance but they should be favourites next season. On a brighter note Joe Pellett took a brilliant 1st at Shoreham in the Novice sculls making it 8 wins for Bexhill on the day. The Grand Aggregate trophies points were added to over both days by the Bexhill crews . In the junior sculls at Deal Joe Guppy took 2nd with Doug Holderway 3rd Matt Hellier 5th and Nick McCorry 6th. In the Junior Senior 4s Phil Hunt, Tony Page, Mark Cowling and Warren M-Harvey came in 3rd at Shoreham whilst Ashley Cahill, Matt Mitchell , D. Holderway and J. Pellet were a fine 3rd in the Senior 4s. In the Ladies Senior 4s a combination of Hosie, Garland, Green, Hunt and Cropper took 4th at Deal and 3rd at Shoreham and Cropper and Garland finished 2nd in the Doubles at Deal. In the Vet 4 at Shoreham Graham Dawes, Steve Hopkins, Andy Bickers and Glen Payne put a strong performance together for a fine 3rd place. Conditions at Shoreham at one stage were so bad that the novice crew of Hopkins, Charles, Cowling and J Howe, had to abandon their race due to their boat filling up with water.
And so with one regatta reaming at Folkestone on Saturday the club is in the unprecedented position of taking the grand 'agg's' at every regatta in the season. A special mention should also go to 'Magic' Mark Mitchell on his 100th Single scull win this weekend, a feat that is possibly unequalled in the history of the Coastal Area Rowing Association.
Men's Junior 4 Champs enjoying their victory. whilst below Claire Hosie and Sophia Green celebrate their Ladies Junior Pairs Championship Win

Bexhill Rowing Club has taken delivery of their 1st new boat for 5 years in the form of a pair boat. This new pair boat was kindly donated by Hazel Pratt & her father and is the latest in boat building design made from carbon-fiber. It was decided that the boat was to be named after Hazel's husband Reg who is a long standing member of the Bexhill Rowing Club.
After a brief word from the club's Chairman Mr. Graham Dawes, Reg informed he crowd of how proud he was to be part of the Bexhill Rowing Club and that he wished every success for those who would row this new boat. Hazel then had the honor of unavailing the name and pouring over the obligatory champagne before the boat was launched into the choppy sea.
The boat, now named "Reg's Pride" was launched for the 1st time by the current senior pairs champions of Mark Mitchell & Kieran Cahill. Reg's Pride will be raced for the 1st time this weekend when the club race at Deal on Saturday & then Shoreham on Sunday where it is expected to lead the field.
Bexhill Rule The Waves for CARA at Southsea Regatta
It was a hot and sunny Summer's day for the 150th Anniversary Southsea Regatta where both the Hants & Dorset clubs and Coastal Area Rowing Association met to race on Saturday. With 21 clubs being represented from Bournemouth in the West to Herne Bay in the East Bexhill's usual amount of wins was never going to be equalled however the club still notched up 4 victories and many league points making them the top CARA club on the day. It was Ladies First in the Junior Pairs with Sophia Green and Claire Hosie closely followed in 2nd by the Hunt twins Eloise and EmmaJane. Bexhill's second win came in the Mens Senior Sculls, Ashley Cahill putting in a Stirling performance to claim his second win in this category this season. The third success arrived in the Mens Senior Pairs, 'Mighty' Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill continuing their dominance in this race. Ashley Cahill and Doug Holderway came in third not far behind. It was Cahill and Holderway teaming together again who notched up Bexhills last victory for the day in the Mens Double Sculls, a feat made even more impressive considering they had not practised in this combination! The Bexhill Crews gained a plethora of points throughout the day. Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland were the top CARA crew in the the Senior Ladies Pairs, Cropper also was 1st for CARA in Ladies Junior Sculls. In undoubtably the most exciting race of the day the Mens Senior Fours the crew of Kieran Cahill, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Matt Hellier were beaten by just half a length by Coalporters from Hants & Dorset. This result still keeps Bexhill in close contention for the Bideford Bowl at the Champs in September. The Mens Junior Pair of Ben Slater & Greg Anderson took 2nd place in the Mens Junior Pairs. Tom Hollick and Dan Renner managed CARA points although Hollicks seat came off mid race. The Mens Junior fours race lived up to its recent form of close finishes with Dan Renner, Tom Hollick, Ben Slater and Greg Anderson following Shoreham into 2nd place. Echoing the men the Ladies Junior 4's of Eloise Hunt, Claire Hosie, Sophia Green and Vinny Hourihane, crossed the line as 2nd CARA club behind Herne Bay. The Junior Sculls saw Holderway and Nick McCorry take CARA points as did Joe Pellet in the Mens Novice Sculls with a creditable 4th place. In the Junior Senior 4, Phil Hunt, Mark Cowling, Tony Page and Neil Papworth in their first race together were the 4th CARA crew over the line a result echoed by the Ladies Senior Four of Eloise Hunt, Hosie, Crropper and Garland. In the Vets A Fours Hunt and Page joined a Herne Bay pair coming in again as 4th CARA club. Worth a mention is Bexhill's member Steve Bickers who on Sunday rowed in an 8 at Henley for Maidstone and came in 2nd an event which could be considered by some as a career High. Bexhiil take a break this weekend, next regattas are Deal on the 24th July and Shoreham 25th July.

All Smiles Sophia and Claire 1st and the Twins Eloise & EmmaJ 2nd at Southsea.
Bexhill Rowers take on calm rivers and rough seas at Henley and Worthing.
You couldn't get more of a contrast in rowing conditions last week as Bexhill's No 1 mens crew mingled with the best river rowers at a serene Henley then made their way to Worthing to join the rest of the club on a very choppy sea whipped up by the south westerlies.
After qualifying at Marlow ( a considerable feat in itself) the crew of Kieran Cahill, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Matt Hellier arrived at the famous Henley course where they were drawn against Poplar . This was always going to be tough as the oppositions strength already showed in the fact that they were 2 stone a man heavier and all taller than the Bexhill crew. However Bexhill gave them a good race, Kieran Cahill told us' "It seemed like a good quick start for us but we were a length down after 100m, we squeezed on and at 1600m w e were only 1/4 a length behind, Mark (Mitchell) hit some ducks on the way down the course coupled with a bit of a headwind which knocked us out of our rhythm , our rate dropped and popular pulled away to win, we. had little to give at the end everybody was shot!!!! At previous races the Poplar crew had beaten the Bexhill 4's times by 15 sec on this day it was only 3. After the race the chaps spent most of the day i as guests of the famous Leander rowing club mixing with some of the distiguised guests of Henley.
And now for something completely different. A late start at Worthing on Saturday did nothing to help the conditions for all the competitors as the seas grew rougher as the day progressed. It is quite well known now though that Bexhill thrive in such conditions and despite their depleted numbers (due to the short notice of this rescheduled regatta), still managed 5 wins! Their first win of the day came from the recent sucessfull ladies pair combination of Sophia Green and Claire Hosie with the Hunt twins Eloise and EmmaJane coming in 4th. Next race saw Matt Hellier take the Men's Novice Sculls, skillfully navigating his way past huge waves towards his victory. Win No3 arrived in what has been the most sucessfull race for Bexhill over this season the Mens Senior sculls After the favourite Mark Mitchell withdrew half way along the course the door was left open for Ashley (Curly) Cahill to take 1st over his brother Kieran with a fine row. Andy Bickers took 5th to claim more points for Bexhill. the Penultimate win came in the Men's Senior Pairs. Mark Mitchel and Kiran Cahill continuing their domination of this event in front of a fine performane for 2nd by Matt Hellier and Joe Guppy. Bexhill's final win was taken by the Mens Senior 4's Championship crew of Kieran Cahill, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Matt Hellier followed in 2nd by Matt Mitchell, Paul Dawes, Doug Holderway & A Cahill. Bexhill crews gained further 2nd's with the Veteran 4 of Steve and Andy Bickers, Glen Payne and Steve Hopkins. Also the Mens Junior 4's with Ben Slater, Tom Hollick, Greg Anderson and Ian Allan whilst 3 boats sank in their race!! After some controversial umpiring and a very close finish the Ladies Senior Pair of Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland lost out on what appeared to be a certain 1st place to take 2nd. Their was more controversy in the Ladies Junior 4's. After a crash with the Worthing four the race should have been called off for a re-row but it was allowed to complete Eloise Hunt, Claire Hosie, Sophia Green and Vinny Hourihane eventually crossing the line in 2nd place. Another 2nd was taken by Doug Holderway in the Junior Sculls with Joe Guppy behind in 5th. Final Points for Bexhill were achieved in the Junior Pairs with Ben Slater & Greg Anderson in 3rd whilst Tom Hollick and Ian Allan still managed a 6th place even after being scuppered by a large wave and climbing back aboard. In the Junior Senior 4's a fine 3rd by Slater, Anderson Josh Howe and Phil Hunt topped a fine day for Bexhill, the club taking home all the Aggregate trophies.
Bexhill Rowers have Winning Weekend on the Water (report from Eastbourne (sat) and Herne Bay (sun ) regattas )

Bexghill Rowing Club's fantastic season continued last weekend with a total of 13 wins at Eastbourne and Herne Bay Regattas. On a fine Summer's Saturday at Eastbourne the early start did not deter The men's Novice four from grabbing Bexhill's first win of the day. After looking a little sleepy at the start the crew of Mark Cowling, Alex Pepper, Josh Howe and Phil Hunt pulled away from the other crews and with a text book turn at the half way point they eventually won by a good 2 lengths. Their victory means that Hunt, Pepper, and Howe are now Junior status rowers. Bexhill's next sucess came in the Mens Junior 4's with Ben Slater, Dan Renner, Greg Anderson and Josh Howe. Renner and Anderson then clocked up their 2nd win of the day in the Junior Pairs. It was the ladies turn next with 2 wins in the pairs races. Claire Hosie and Sophia Green claimed the Ladies Junior race whilst Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland took the Ladies Senior Pairs. Win No6 cane in the Mens senior Pairs with Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill back to their usual form and a comfortable victory. The most sucessfull race of the day for Bexhill was the Mens Senior sculls with a 1 2 3 for Mark Mitchell Asley Cahill and Kiran Cahill crossing the line in that order. Bexhill's last win at Eastbourne came in the blue ribband event the Mens Senior 4's, Kieran Cahill, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Matt Hellier taking another 1st with a fine row. The most exciting race however was the Vet 4's, Steve and Andy Bickers, Glen Payne and Steve Hopkins put in a fine effoft and were level with the eventual wineers all through the race fthey were unfortunate in innishing 2nd less than a canvas behind. Other club points came with a 2nd in the Ladies Junior 4's by Hosie, Green, Eloise Hunt and Vinny Hourihane, a 3rd in the Ladies Senior 4's by Holly Makin, Emma Hunt and Garland & Cropper. TheSenior 4's of Joe Pellet, Doug Holderway and C.Cahill and Matt Mitchell took 4th place whilst Tony Page, Howe,Hunt and Cowling gained Bexhill's last point finnishing 6th in the men's Junior senior 4''s .
And so on to Herne Bay on Sunday and another 5 wins and some landnmark achievements. Win one came in the Senior Sculls with Mark mitchell not only winning the Championship with 5 races still to come he also has won it for 10 consecutive years!! Also winning the Mens Senior 4's Championship early were the crew of Kieran Cahill, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Matt Hellier. Mark Mitchell and Bexhills 3rd win of the day was the Mens Senior pairs his co rower Doug Holderway's first win in this event. Next up saw the Ladies Junior 4 of Eloise Hunt, Claire Hosie, Sophia Green and Vinny Hourihane cross the line to make it 4 for Bexhill followed by the 5th victory in the Ladies Senior Pairs, Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland maling it 2 in two days. The clubs other points were taken by the following crews. Alex Pepper, Ben Slater, Dan Renner and Greg Anderson took 2nd in the Junior 4's, Hosie and Green also came 2nd in the Ladies Junior Pairs just in front of the Hunt twins in 3rd. A fine performance by Ben Slater, Alex Pepper, Greg Anderson and Josh Howe gained them points by coming 3rd in the mens JS 4's. Another 3rd was taken by Dan Renner and Greg Anderson in the Junior pairs with Ashley Cahill also 3rd in the Senior Sculls. Finally their were 2 fifth places for the Veteran 4 of Steve and Andy Bickers, Glen Payne and Steve Hopkins and the Senior 4's Paul Dawes, Holderway, A Cahill & Joe Pellett.
HASTINGS & BEXHILL REGATTA reports (ta Mark)
Hastings
It was perfect conditions for Hastings Rowing Regatta on Saturday with a flat calm sea and hot sunshine. This proved a great boost for Bexhill Rowing club who managed a massive haul of 5 wins, 6 2nds & 4 3rds earning them the Junior, Senior & Grand Aggregate cups for the regatta. These wins came from familiar crews such as Mark Mitchell in the senior sculls & Kieran Cahill Mark Mitchell in the senior pairs. Both combinations proving unbeatable in the season so far with 3 straight wins. The Senior B crew of Doug Holdaway & Ashley Cahill finished 2nd with Matt Hellier & Joe Guppy 4th. Mark & Kieran then teamed up with Matt & Joe to win the premier event of the day, the Senior fours. They were followed home in 5th by Matt Mitchell, Doug Holdaway, Paul Dawes & Ashley Cahill. Both Hellier & Guppy raced the novice sculls event with Hellier piping Guppy with a 2nd & 3rd place.
The Men's Junior four of Greg Anderson, Dan Renner, Tom Hollick & Ben Slatter produced an excellent performance to take their 2nd win of the year & promoting them to Junior Senior status next year. The crew then split up to race the Junior pairs where Dan & Tom finished 2nd with Greg & Ben 4th. The crew then reformed to take 5th in the junior senior race.
The Ladies Junior pair of Eloise & Emma- Jane Hunt managed 2nd with Sophia Green & Claire Hosie 3rd in a very close race. As with the men's junior crew, they team up with Vinnie Hourihane in stead of Emma-Jane to win the ladies junior fours by a massive margin to increase their lead in their championship hunt. The defending ladies Senior pair champions of Rachael Garland & Jemma Cropper managed a very creditable 3rd for their 1st race of the year.
The veteran four of Phil Hunt, Tony Page, Graham Dawes & Paul Dawes managed a creditable 5th after a re-row in the first final. All these points secured a massive haul for the club and put them into good stead for their own regatta the following day.
Bexhill
It was business as usual at a slightly choppy Bexhill Regatta for Mark Mitchell who won the senior sculls closely followed by Ashley Cahill in 2nd & Andy Bickers 4th. This was marks 4th consecutive win of the year putting him 4-0 up in his hunt of a 10th consecutive senior sculls title. Joe Guppy managed a 2nd in the novice sculls event as did Doug Holdaway in the Junior event.
The winning senior four of Kieran Cahill, Matt Hellier, Joe Guppy & Mark Mitchell coxed by Greg Anderson, again proved too strong for the rest of the field by wining their home regatta & taking a massive lead in the championship with 4 wins. They were pushed hard of the start by the B crew of Matt Mitchell, Doug Holdaway, Paul Dawes & Ashley Cahill coxed by Jess Cambell who lead off the start before falling back to 4th on the finish line. The Senior Pair of Doug & Ashley had a hard race securing 2nd place just missing out on their maiden win by 1 length.
The Men's Junior four produced another fantastic performance with a win in the junior pair for Dan & Tom before teaming up with Greg & Ben to take another win in the junior four race. They also take the lead in both their championships with 4 regattas gone.
The ladies Junior four of Claire Hosie, Vinnie Hourihane, Sophia Green and Eloise Hunt flew off their start in increasingly choppy seas. Showing that they can win in flat & rough water, they increased their lead and won their event with a very strong performance. Splitting up for the pairs event it was the hunt twins that were piped into 3rd by Hosier & Green who finished 2nd just behind the winners.
A change in the usual veteran four crew with Paul Dawes sitting in for the absent Steve Bickers, the crew rowing with Andy Bickers, Glen Hopkins & Steve Hopkins managed a creditable 3rd despite not having rowed together as a crew before. Adding an additional race for the regatta, the veteran over 50's crew of Steve McCorry, Glen Paine, Graham Dawes & Steve Hopkins managed a well earned 3rd place. This was also the same result for the ladies senior pair of Garland & Cropper in just their 2nd regatta.
Once again, with such a strong performances from all club members, the club pulled of another fine regatta securing all 3 major aggregates for the day. It must be pointed out that none of this would be possible without the support of all the club members (active rowers and non-active rowers) who helped out with the regatta from start to finish including serving food & drinks all day. Our thanks must go out to the main sponsor Jo Field and family who is the daughter of the late Geoff Larkin, a past avid Bexhill Rowing Club member, rower & supporter. With our own regatta now past, the club can look forward to the remaining regattas with nothing but positive vibes from the weekends results.
This was due to be the last regatta in the current club house as redevelopment starts this year. The club will be looking for major sponsors to assist in the build costs of approximately £70k to complete the project and provide Bexhill town with the Rowing Club it deserves. Any one wishing to assist in the development by means of funding or support are invited to come down to the club and discuss their possible involvement with any senior club member. You can find them on the normal training nights of Tuesday / Thursday from 6pm and Sunday (regattas permitting) from 10:30am.
MARLOW
Bexhill's Senior 4 No 1 crew took time off from their victorious coastal league duties on Saturday in a successful bid to qualify for the sport's most prestigious event, the Henley Royal Regatta at the end of the month.
Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy, Matt Hellier and Kieran Cahill, attended the Marlow Regatta, (the home of the 2012 Olympics), where they joined the many famous river clubs from Henley, Cambridge, Oxford, Eton, Windsor, Radley, etc.
In their first heat they finished 2nd behind Oxford Brookes with a respectable time of 6.50 over the 2000 metre course to give them entry to the semi final. An exciting close race saw the Bexhill crew finish just 2 seconds behind Southampton University and Henley in 3rd with a time of 6.42, enough to see them through to the final. Their last race didnt start particularly well and at the 500 metre stage they were in 6th place but their stroke rate increased and they crossed over the line in a comendable 4th place in a time of 6.43, Oxford Brookes the final winners. Their performance on the day qualifies the Bexhill crew for Henley where they will start in the heats on the 30th June, finals take place over the following Saturday and Sunday. We wish them the best of luck representing our town aginst all those famous names.
DOVER REGATTA 5 MORE WINS !!
Bexhill’s successful rowers travelled to Dover last Saturday and bought home the three top trophies, the Grand, Senior and Junior Agggregates, awarded for the most points overall and in category on the day.
On a gorgeous sunny day with a reasonably flat sea the club knocked up a very respectable 5 race wins.
First win came in the Ladies Junior Pairs, in an incredibly close race the Hunt twins Eloiise and Emma-Jane just saw off the challenge of fellow club mates Sophia Green and Claire Hosie crossing the line with just a canvas (metre), between them. Next up was the Mens Senior Pairs of Mark Mitchell and Keiran Cahill taking their 13th consecutive win in CARA regattas. Taking a point for the first time in this class Joe Guppy and Matt Hellier came over the line in 6th place. Mark Mitchell echoed his winning ways by taking first place over Kieran Cahill in 2nd in the Senior Sculls, Ashley Cahill close behind managed 4th place.
Guppy claimed Bexhill’s 4th win with a fine performance in the Novice Sculls, Hellier took 5th with Alex Pepper just failing to qualify for the final after a fine effort from the 16 year old. The last win of the regatta came in the premium event of the day the Senior 4’s. Matt Hellier, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Kieran Cahill keeping everyone on the edge eventually winning by half a length over the line. The B crew of Nick McCorry, Ashley Cahill, Dan Renner and Doug Holderway came in 4th.
Although wins are what Bexhill Rowing Club strive for there were important point winners throughout the day. The Ladies Junior 4 of Claire Hosie, Vinnie Hourihane, Sophia Green and Eloise Hunt were so near to another win but were just pipped to take 2nd. In the Junior Pairs Tom Hollick and Dan Renner took 2nd place with Ben Slater and Greg Anderson following in 4th. The Novice fours of Alex Pepper, Phil Hunt, Mark Cowling and Josh Howe progressed from their 2nd place in their heat to finnish 4th in the final. The Men’s Junior Sculls saw Bexhill’s Doug Holderway take 2nd place with Dan Renner in 3rd. Another 2nd in the Men’s Junior 4’s was claimed by Renner, Slater, Hollick and Anderson with the B crew of Alex Pepper, Tony Page, Phil Hunt and Josh Howe in 6th, Howe bravely rowing on without a seat that had come off even before the turn!
A fine row by the Veteran crew of Andy and Steve Bickers, Glen Payne and Steve Hopkins claimed 2nd place. In the Junior Sculls Renner took 3rd Holderway 5th and just missing out on the points in his first sorte into this category from novices Nick McCorry. The hastily assembled Ladies Senior 4’s of the Hunt Twins, Sophia Green and Rachel Garland finished 5th after Claire Hosie withdrew suffering from a broken rib picked up at Worthing the previous week! Lastly in the Junior Senior 4 Pepper, Page, Hunt and Howe gained 3points in 4th position.
This weekend see’s the club keeping it local with a visit to Hastings on Saturday then it’s their home regatta (we are extremely grateful to the regattas sponsors the Larkin family), on Sunday. Races start at 10.30 sharp, until around 3.30pm. The club would love to have your support so why not go along and give them a helpful cheer. There will be tea, coffee, cold drinks and a BBQ plus snacks available at the boat hose by the De la Warr Pavillion during the event, whilst after midday the Social Club will be open if you need a cold beer or chilled wine.
Worthing : Record Breakers
Oarsome ! thats a fair description of how well Bexhill Rowing Clubs crews faired at Worthing Town’s regatta on Sunday with a record number of points gained on the day. After the disappointment of Saturdays cancellation due to the rough sea Bexhill’s spirits were lifted with an incredible 9 wins!
The Ladies Junior 4’s, Claire Hosie, Vinnie Hourihane, Sophia Green and Eloise Hunt, started the day off brightly winning by 6 lenghts from their nearest rivals. Next the Junior Pair of Eloise and Emma-Jane Hunt bought the club’s second victory of the day followed swiftly after by the Men’s novice four. Tom Hollick, Greg Anderson and Ben Slater now progress to Juniors accompanied by Alex Pepper who won his first novice race. The winning streak continued with Doug Holderway in the Mens Junior Sculls. By now the wind was whipping up the sea and Dan Renner would surely have followed in 2nd place but unfortunately he was scuppered by a large wave which meant he was in for an early bath, To show the character of the Bexhill rowers he climbed back in and rowed to the finish gaining 2 points for the club coming over the line in 5th out of 8!
The Men’s senior Sculls was dominated by Bexhill rowers with Matt Mitchell finishing first, Kieran Cahill 2nd and Ashley Cahill in 3rd. As conditions grew even worse It was the men’s Junior 4’s turn next, the 1st place was taken by the crew of Tom Hollick, Greg Anderson, Dan Renner and Ben Slater, A creditable 4th place and more club points, went to Phil Hunt, Alex Pepper, Tony Page and taking stroke for the first time Josh Howe. And the victories kept coming next up was the Mens Novice sculls, Nick McCorry finally made it to Junior status with a fine row. The main race of the day saw the Senior 4 mens crew consisting of Matt Hellier, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Kieran Cahill storm to a seven length win over an exceptionally good second place effort by the B crew of Nick McCorry, Ashley Cahill, Dan Renner and Doug Holderway. Bexhill’s last win came in the Senior Pairs, Kieran Cahill and Mark Mitchell taking 1st place with Ashley Cahill and Doug Holderway in 3rd and gaining points in their first pair row together Matt Hellier and Greg Anderson.
The Men’s vet’s of Glen Payne, Graham and Paul Dawes and Andy Bickers also also gained points with a fine 5th place bringing the days total over the 90points mark thus a record for a Coastal Area Rowing Association regatta. Next stop Dover on Saturday, can the club keep up such an impressive run ? Watch this Space!!
HERNE BAY VIKING SHIELD 1st May 2010
Bexhill's men and women showed their strength as the prelude to the coastal season got underway in traditional seasonal showers at Herne Bay's Viking Shield event on Saturday.
The successful club returned home with 4 1sts and a bunch of close 2nd and 3rd places to show that they mean to keep up their high status within the coastal rowing scene. The Senior men are going to be hard to beat this year they won their Senior 4 race by 5 lengths from their nearest rivals. The crew of Mark Mitchell, Matt Hellier, Kieran Cahill and Joe Guppy were delighted with their victory. If they keep up this fine standard of rowing they will be favourites for the ultimate prize at the end of the season the famous Bideford Bowl.
Another fine win came in the Junior senior 4. A scratch crew of Tom Hollick James Copper, Alex Pepper and Dan Rennor surprised everyone by leading from the start, a feat more noteable bearing in mind two of them are novices!!
Win 3 saw possibly the strongest event, for Bexhill the Senior Sculls. A 1st for Mark Mitchell 2nd for Kieran Cahill , 4th for Ashley Cahill and a good finish for Andy Bickers in the event that had 13 competitors. Bexhill's final win came in the Senior Men's pairs with Kieran Cahill and Mark Mitchell continuing where they left off last season. A creditable 3rd place went to Doug Holderway and Ashley Cahill.
Notable other results included 2 second places for the ladies. Yas Page Sophia Green, Claire Hosie and Vinny Hourihane, performed admirably considering they had not rowed in a competitive race together before in the Ladies Junior coxed fours and Sophia and Claire teamed up for a 2nd in the Ladies Junior Pairs. In the Mens Junior 4's Tom Hollick, Alex Pepper, James Copper and Dan Renner took 3rd place whilst the more elderly gentlemen crew of Warren Mortimer-Harvey, Mark Cowling, Tony Page and Phil Hunt came in 6th out of 9 entries. Nick McCorry took a 3rd in the Mens Novice Sculls whilst in the Junior Sculls race Bexhill claimed a 2nd with Dan Renner, 4th Doug Holderway and 5th Phil McCorry. Finally the Vets 4 of Steve Bickers, Glen Payne, Steve Hopkins and Andy Bickers rowed well to finish 3rd. All in all the club returned to Bexhill with high hopes for the new season.

Well done to everyone who braved the chilling temperatures of -4 to 1 degree C to row at this huge event. Once again our club showed it's strength and this time on the very water that the 2012 Olympics will be rowed on!!
It was a very early start and a freezing one!! Crews had to be on the water at 8 a.m. There was lots of time for practice as they didnt actually start racing til around 9 so to keep ourselves warm the crews darted up and down the first 500 m of the course until they were called in by the starter. Top time of 6mins 44 secs by the Senior 4+ river boat category was achieved by K.cahill, Mark Mitchell, Joe Guppy and Chris Mizzen finnishing an amazing 6th out of 182 boats that took part in the
At the end of the regatta our club went home with 4 category wins, 4 seconds and two thirds. Keep it up Bexhill!!!!

South Coast Rowing Championships – Folkestone 5th September 2009.
Bexhill Rowing Club travelled to Folkestone for the 53rd South Coast Rowing Championships and 4th Junior regatta. Strong winds were forecasted but luckily the westerly direction provided just enough shelter to allow all the races to be run without incident. All the Rowing clubs from Kent to Cornwall made the trip and Bexhill again proved to be one of the strongest clubs with 2 wins and claiming the aggregate trophy for the most points scored in the open regatta.
Win number one came in the Men’s senior four. Bexhill had 2 crews in the 8 boat final, the A crew of It is raced by the six fastest senior men’s coxed fours on the South Coast of England. Bexhill’s crew of Ash Cahill(bow), Doug Holderway, Mark Mitchell, Kieran Cahill (stroke) and cox Jess Campbell got off to a good start and continued to pull away but with 500 meters to go and only a boat length lead a big push pulled them 3 lengths clear at the finish. The B crew of Phil McCorry(bow), Paul Dawes, Nick Woolger, Nick McCorry and cox Rachel Garland finished in 5th.
Win number 2 went to the men’s junior fours crew of Wil Miller(bow), Tom Hollick , Dan Renner, James Copper(stroke) and cox Rachel Garland. A lot of hard training since the last regatta was well rewarded; they finished nearly 3 lengths clear at the finish line.
The junior ladies crew of Eloise Hunt (bow), Emma-Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock, Vinny Hourihane (stroke) and cox Andy Bickers managed a second place but felt the start was to blame due to boats closer to the starter being able to hear the start commands more clearly. They were a boat length down before they had started rowing and finished just 2 boat lengths behind at the finish.
The men’s novice four of Ben Slater (bow), Josh Howe, Matt Richards, Greg Anderson (stroke) and cox Phil McCorry finished 3rd after making the final.
Another 3rd place was in the over 50 veteran fours. Bob Balchin (bow), Graham Dawes, Ray Phillips and Glen Payne (stroke) had a close battle for the whole race and narrowly missed out on second in the closing stages of the race.
The ladies senior four crew of Rebecca Dawes (bow), Arabella MacDonald, Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland (stroke) had a good row and finished fifth.
Bexhill had 2 junior under 18 crews participating in the 4th South Coast Junior regatta that was held after the main event. The boys under 18 four of Alex Pepper (bow), Tom Hollick, Ben Slater and Greg Anderson (stroke) nearly pulled off victory but had to settle for second, but with the crew being formed on the day this was a fantastic result. The girls under 18 four of Megan Milarski (bow), Sophia Green, Lauren Moyse and Vinny hourihane (stroke) also had a great row with 3rd place.
Club captain Andy Bickers said “I’m extremely proud of what we managed to achieve with our limited resources and again showed the rest of the South coast clubs we are still a major force.”
Bexhill Rowing Club Bexhill and Hastings Regatta report 22nd to 23rd August 2009
Bexhill 23rd August (see Pics on Photo Page)
Bexhill Rowing Club finally had their home regatta held after 3 years of bad weather causing the event to be cancelled. Bexhill Town Regatta, which without the generous support of the family of Geoff Larkin may not have been possible, finally got underway last Sunday in warm and sunny conditions. Hopes were high for some good results and they were dully delivered with Bexhill dominating the event. 6 wins, 6 seconds, 3 thirds, Novice, Ladies, Senior and Grand Aggregate cups.
The memorable and dramatic moment of the regatta came in the Ladies Senior pairs final. Bexhill’s pair of Jemma Cropper & Rachel Garland just needed one more win the clinch the championship. The race started and Bexhill lead but just by the smallest of margins, out of the turns at halfway Shoreham had the edge again by only half a boat length. The 2 crews got closer and closer then with a slight clash positions were reversed, Bexhill now leading stormed away to cross the line first with Hunt twin Eloise and Emma-Jane coming home in 4th place. Unfortunately the officials upheld a protest from Shoreham and a re-row between the 2 crews was called. Despite this massive blow Bexhill dully took the start line and the race was re-started. Again Bexhill lead but this time never let Shoreham get close enough and crossed the line 3 boats lengths ahead to a massive cheer from the shoreline to become Ladies Senior pairs champions.
The second win came in the ladies novice fours. Alex Hunt, Donna Powell, Sophia Green, Arabella MacDonald & cox Jes Campbell won in a close battle with rivals from Dover. The win now meant Powell, Green and Arabella move up to junior status rowers.
Bexhill’s novice men emulated their clubs ladies by winning the men’s novice fours. Wil Miller, Tom Hollick, Ben Slater, Matt Richard and cox Doug Holderway powered home to keep the home crowd cheering.
Champion senior pairing Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill had a realtively easy win with Doug Holderway and Ash Cahill finished in second. Phil & Nic McCorry came home 5th. Andy Bickers and Joe Pellett scored the last point in 6th.
Win one went to Mark Mitchell in the men’s senior sculls. The current and 9 times champion had a race long battle with club mate Kieran Cahill but pulled to a 2 length lead at the finish. Cahill came in 2nd with Andy Bickers and Chris Doswell finishing in the points for 5th and 6th places respectively.
Bexhill’s final and sixth win came in the Ladies junior fours, in fact Bexhill claimed one and two in one of the closest races of the day. The crew of Lauren Moyse, Claire Hosie, Rebecca Dawes, Arabella MacDonald & cox Phil McCorry were the winners. Second place went to Megan Milarski, Sophia Green, Hannah Ruddock, Vinny Hourihane & cox Jess Campbell with Herne Bay in third, all crews covered less than 2 boat lengths.
Second place in the men’s senior fours went to the crew of Ash Cahill, Doug Holderway, Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill. The crew is coming together well and there is great optimism for the open senior race at the Championships in two weeks.
Men’s Novice sculls provided another close finish with Dover just snatching the win from Joe Pellett and Nic McCorry who finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Third places went to the men’s four of Wil Miller, Tom Hollick, Dan Renner and James Copper in both the Junior and Junior/Senior men’s fours. Renner and Copper also managed a great second place just behind current champions Deal in man’s Junior pairs.
The Veteran four of Paul Dawes, Graham Dawes, Bob Balchin, Glen Payne and cox Emily Tillett managed their best position this year with fourth place, the second crew of Mark Cowling, Tony Page, Phil Hunt & Warren Harvey followed them home in fifth spot.
Dan Renner was fifth and Phil McCorry sixth in the men’s junior sculls.
Eloise Hunt, Emma-Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock and Vinny Hourihane finished fifth in the ladies senior fours.
Bexhill Rowing Club would like to thank our other sponsors Doreen Wilson and family, Sarah, Mary and Theresa Miller, G M Matthews Butchers, Graham Dawes and P.J. Trophies. Also a big thank you to the Hastings & St. Leonards Lifeguards, Bexhill Beach Inspector, and all the help provided by parents and friends of Bexhill Rowing Club members.
Hastings 22nd August
Hastings regatta was held in slightly rougher conditions but Bexhill dealt well with them and recorded some good results.
2 wins were recorded, the first being the men’s senior pairing of Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill. Doug Holderway and Ash Cahill finished third, fourth were Matt Hellier and Joe Pellett with Nic and Phil McCorry sixth.
The second win was in the men’s senior sculls and it was Kieran Cahill this time getting the better of team mate Mark Mitchell to record a one two finish. Ash Cahill was fourth and Andy Bickers sixth.
The men’s senior four (Ash Cahill, Doug Holderway, Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill) finished a strong second as did the Ladies Senior pairing of Jemma Cropper & Rachel Garland.
Another second place came courtesy of the men’s junior fours. (Wil Miller, Tom Hollick, Dan Renner and Matt Richard)
Southsea Regatta Report by captain A. Bickers
Bexhill rowing club travelled to Southsea for the largest coastal regatta in the country. With 21 rowing clubs from Kent to Dorset competing wins would be harder to come by they managed 3 race wins, 1 second and 2 thirds. The conditions were some of the worst a coastal rower would encounter with winds gusting over 30knots at times making staying afloat very difficult. Many crews sank on the day keeping the safety boats very busy.
The first win of the day was in the ladies senior pair’s. Current championship leaders Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland dominated the race to come through and win by over 4 boat lengths.
Next win came unexpectedly in the men’s junior pairs. Dan Renner and James Copper managed to very choppy conditions better than their competitors to win their first pairs race together.
Kieran Cahill dominated the men’s senior sculls with his brother Ash Cahill and club captain Andy Bickers coming in 4th and 5th respectively.
The ladies junior pair provided a second place for twins Emma-Jane and Eloise Hunt.
In the men’s senior pairs brothers Ash and Kieran Cahill lead from the start till the last 200 meters when a massive wave hit their boat. This in turn cause Kieran’s seat to twist and become jammed. By the time he had freed it they could only manage 3rd, but considering it’s their first race together this was a great row.
The ladies junior fours produced a third position. Eloise Hunt, Emma-Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock and Vinny Hourihane had a great start but fare less well in the rough and windy condition.
The ladies novice four of Megan Milarski, Claire Hosie, Lauren Hoyse and Donna Powell rowed well in the conditions despite the lack of rowing experience to score a good 4th position.
In the men’s novice sculls Dan Renner finished 4th with James Copper in his first sculling race 5th.
Doug Holderway also produced a good 4th position in the men’s junior sculls.
Wil Miller, Tom Hollick, Dan Renner and James Copper mane the final of the men’s junior fours and came home an excellent 4th place.
The novice men (Alex Pepper, Josh Howe, Ben Slater and Tom Hollick) also managed to make the final but just missed out on the points in 7th.

Worthing Regatta Report 13.6.09
The 2009 Coastal Amateur Rowing Association season finally got underway in a warm and sunny Worthing. Bexhill as they have for the last eight year dominated the season opener with 6 wins, 2 seconds, 5 thirds and a host of points scoring places.
The first win came in the Ladies Junior pairs, The Hunt twins Eloise and Emma-Jane lead from start to finish for their first pairs win. In the first pairs race together Claire Hosie and Lauren Moyse rowed well and finished 3rd.
Next up it was Bexhill’s Junior ladies who had to battle hard with the home crew from Worthing to score a 3 boat length win. Hannah Ruddock, Eloise Hunt, Emma-Jane Hunt, Vinny Hourihane and cox Rachel Garland were overjoyed after all the work gone in during the winter.
The third win came in the Men’s senior pairs with Kieran Cahill & Mark Mitchell winning by a massive margin. They led from start to finish and were coming ashore as second place was finishing! Ben Muggeridge and Ash Cahill backed them up with a 4th place finish.
The men’s novice sculls provided Bexhill’s 4th win. Dan Renner powered through and won comfortably and will be looking to move up a status by winning one more race next time out at Eastbourne.
The wins kept coming with a new Ladies pairing of Jemma Cropper and Rachel Garland. They raced hard all the way to the line to win the Senior Ladies pairs event.
The last of Bexhill’s 6 wins was in the men’s senior sculls. Mark Mitchell continued his dominance of this event with Kieran Cahill keeping him honest in 2nd. Ash Cahill had problems at the turns but fought back to claim the last point in 6th place.
Bexhill’s men’s senior fours crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Ash Cahill, Kieran Cahill and cox Greg Anderson finished 2nd despite never racing together. They kept current favourites Herne Bay within a few boat lengths.
Doug Holderway was Bexhill’s only men’s junior sculler and finished in 3rd place.
Bexhill’s junior fours crew of Ash Sutton, Tom Hollick, Dan Renner and James Copper finished 3rd but would of managed second had one the rower footplates not broken during the race. They went on to score another 3rd in the Junior-Senior fours and Renner & Copper teamed up for 3rd in the Junior the pairs.
The Men’s novice four of Liam Midwinter, Phil Hunt, Alex Pepper and Greg Anderson finished 5th in their first race together.

Bexhill Rowing Club Weekend Break on the Isle of Wight. ( See Report Page)
Bexhill’s rowers pre season warm up continued over the weekend with visits to the Hants and Dorset Association’s Ryde and Shanklin regattas. With the Senior Men’s four A crew staying at home to train and a few members unavailable it was a good time to experiment so the club was not expecting its usual successes. However by the end of the weekend there were some notable results especially from the Women rowers, showing once more that they can expect to be a strong force this season.
Doug Holderway and Ashley Cahill gained two very creditable 2nd places in the Men’s Senior Pairs on both Saturday and Sunday. This was echoed by the Women’s Junior 4’s of Elouise Hunt , Sophia Green, Claire Hosie and Vinny Hourihane with their close fought 2nds from the leading boat in both regattas. Other 2nd places were achieved by Dan Renner in the Junior sculls at Ryde and Nick McCorry in the Novice Sculls at Shanklin. Bexhill were represented by its junior and novice men in both regattas. Utilising a combination of Tom Hollick, Ben Slater, Dan Renner, Greg Anderson and Tony Page, they made sure Bexhill were the first of the CARA represented clubs past the post in all Junior and Junior Senior coxed four events.
In the mens Junior Pairs at Shanklin, Greg Anderson and Ben Slater took 2nd place from Dan Renner and Tom Hollick in 3rd. In the Senior Sculls Doug Holderway, Ashley Cahill and Andy Bickers all put up strong challenges on both days which on a normal CARA league regatta day would have claimed the club league points. On the final race of the weekend involving Bexhill crews the pair of Claire Hosie and Sophia Green in the outside lane, were well on their way to a Women’s Junior pair win until in the last quarter of the race a rogue wake from a passing hovercraft saw them struggle with rough water eventually passing the finish line in 4th out of 10 boats. On a lighter note in the first ever midnight swan pedlo race at Ryde the pair of Tony Page and Doug Holderway beat Greg Anderson and Lord Ben Slater in a controversial race where the course was not made clear by the stewards. Bexhill’s season starts in earnest on the 29th May with a double weekend at Worthing on the Saturday and Sunday. The club welcomes anyone to come along and cheer your town on!
