Bexhill Rowers Enjoy a Super 8 River Wins in the West Country

Bexhill Rowing Club travelled to Dartmouth and Bideford last week to participate in two river regattas and came away with 8 wins and a plethora of places to show that they are not just a successful coastal club.

The long journey to Devon did nothing to stop the Women’s Eight taking the first place in the first race at Dartmouth’s famous Royal Regatta on Thursday. The victorious crew included Eloise Hunt, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper, Claire Hosie, Sarah Povey , Rachel Garland, Katie Skelton and Annabele Laity. The club’s second win saw the Menes Senior B 4+ (or Junior Senior crew as known on the coast it), of Ben Slater, Nick McCorry, Dan Renner and Greg Anderson skilfully hold off 2nd place Dart Totnes in a close race on their own water. The third win at Dartmouth came with the Men’s Open Double, Steve Hopkins and Jim Dixon rowing a superb race together for the first time! Bexhill took three 2nd places in the competition the Women’s Senior A 4+ of  Hunt, Green,  Cropper & Hosie fought all the way but couldn’t match the experience of the winning river trained crew. Club Captain Phil McCorry took a well deserved 2nd in his Senior Single Scull C race. The last race of the day was a thriller with a Bexhill crew of  Slater, N McCorry,  Renner, Anderson, Doug Holdaway, Kieran Cahill, Matt Hellier and Ashley Cahill matching Plymouth and Dart Totnes all the way to the finish in the Men’s 8 to take another 2nd by less than a length. Holdaway and K Cahill took 3rd in the Men’s Senior A Pairs as did Matt Hellier in the Senior C Sculls and P McCorry in the Senior B Sculls. The Novice 4 of  Josh Howe, Dave Williams, Jack and Tony Page did well to take 2nd in their heat but again river experience of their rivals saw them come in 6th in the final. The Club travelled from the South Coast to the North Coast on Saturday to Bideford where they came away with 5 victorious from the day. The Men’s and ladies 8’s both beat off their river rivals for two sensational wins against the odds whilst the Men’s Senior A of  the Cahill brothers Holdaway and Hellier claimed another against fierce river rivals. Win 4 and 5 came in the mixed classes with Hosie, Green, Holdaway & A Cahill taking the Senior A and Laity, Skelton, Howe and Williams claiming their first win in their first outing together. 2nd places were taken by Hunt, Green,  Cropper & Hosie in the Women’s Senior A 4+. Whilst in the  Men’s Senior B , Slater, N McCorry, Renner and Anderson showed that after all they are just human being beaten for the first time this season to take a second place against their river trained competitors. Finally Howe, Williams, J & T Page came in 5th in the Novice 4’s and 6th in the Senior C 4’s. Club Captain Phil McCorry  told us  that he was proud of the commitment and attitude showed by the Bexhill crews. After a round trip of around 600 miles the club will be now  training hard for next Saturday’s Championships at the Olympic Venue Dorney Lakes. Supporters are welcome. See bexhillrowingclub.com for details.

Bexhill's Rowers braved the wind and rain at Herne Bay regatta to bring home 8 wins on another memorable day for the club. With the South-westerly winds coming off the coast Herne Bay was probably the only place there could have been a regatta last Saturday and Bexhill made the most of the unexpected rowing opportunity.  First win of the day came in the Men's Junior Senior 4. The crew of Ben Slater, Nick McCorry, Dan Renner, and Greg Anderson were looking for their 6th victory in a row and achieved it with ease. Their achievement was rewarded further as they also became J/S League Champions as there are only 5 regattas remaining this season they cannot be caught for points. The Club's second win saw Kieran Cahill take 1st from Mark Mitchell in 2nd, whilst Ashley Cahill took 4th and Phil McCorry claimed the last available point in 6th in the Men's Senior Sculls. The third win that came in the Ladies Novice Fours was quite unexpected. The usual crew of Katie Skelton, Annabele Laity, and Yasmin Page were joined by Laura Quinn an Under 16 rower new to the club with very little experience of racing. The girls were told to just do their best, but as the 8 boats set off at the start the Bexhill boat could be seen taking the lead. With a huge effort from the crew, the skills of their cox, Rachel Garland,  and with  their fellow team-mates and supporters cheering them on, they actually increased their lead to cross the line  a length and a half clear of their nearest rivals.

Laura Quinn,  Katie Skelton,  Annabele Laity, and Yasmin Page joined by cox Rachel Garland in their 1st Novice 4 Victory.

Next up were the Ladies Senior Fours and for the second time in the day a Championship was up for grabs. The A crew of Claire Hosie, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper and Eloise Hunt were once again ahead of their rivals from Worthing all the way and took their Championship title with ease, to the sounds of much celebration from the shore. The B crew of Vinny Hourihane, Emma Hunt, Emma Peebles and R Garland finished behind them in a respectable 4th place. Win No5 came in a 1 - 2  for Bexhill with  Matt Hellier pipping club mate Doug Holdaway in 1st and P. McCorry in 5th in the Men's Junior Sculls. The Club's 6th win came in the most prestigious race of the day, the Men's Senior Four's. After making club history at Southsea the previous week the Bexhill A crew of K and A Cahill, D Holdaway and M Hellier were in no mood to take it easy and stayed ahead of their nearest rivals Deal  by 2 lengths for the whole race. The B crew of N McCorry, G Anderson, B Slater and D Renner came home behind them in 5th place. Bexhill's penultimate win was achieved in the Ladies Senior Pairs, C Hosie and S Green replicating their early season form with relative ease coming in 1st followed by  Eloise Hunt and R Garland in 4th and J Cropper and E Peebles in 6th. The Club's final victory came in the Men's Senior Pairs with K Cahill and M Hellier taking 1st place comfortably ahead of club mates D Holdaway and A Cahill in 2nd place. Adding to Bexhill's League Total Points for the day were the Vet's of Andy Bickers,Chris Doswell, Glen Payne and Steve Hopkins coming in 2nd behind Folkestone in a close race. In the Men's Novice Sculls Ben Slater finished 2nd ahead of Greg Anderson in 3rd whilst K Skelton and A Laity did well in only their 2nd full pair race to come in 4th after taking a very wide course in the Ladies Junior Pairs. Finally the Men's Junior 4 of Josh Howe,Dave Williams, Jack and Tony Page came in 5th as did the Novice 4 of J.Howe, D Williams J Page and Chris Phillips. The club took the Grand Aggregate trophy for the sixth consecutive time this season and are now in an almost unbeatable lead in the League table after 6 regattas!! The Clubs travelled to Dover on Sunday only to be told the event was to be cancelled after just one U16 quad race,as conditions were too dangerous to allow the regatta to continue.

Bexhill Rowers  make history at Southsea

Despite sea conditions that would have caused most regattas to be called off Southsea Regatta took place last Saturday  and saw Bexhill take a remarkable 8 wins including the Portsmouth Grand Challenge Cup for the first time in the club's history! These wins are more significant than normal as the Southsea Regatta is attended not just by the  10  clubs that form the Coastal Amateur Rowing Association but also the 12 clubs from the Hants and Dorset A.R.A.

The days wins started with the Men's Senior pairs Kieran Cahill and Matt Hellier comfortably crossing the line by four lengths to the 2nd placed crew.  Win No2 soon followed with the ladies Senior pair of  Rachel Garland and Jemma Cropper taking 1st place as the sea conditions worsenned, with the hunt twins Eloise and Emma Jane taking the 6th place point. Bexhill made it 3 in a row with Matt Hellier grabbing 1st from team mates Doug Holderway in 2nd and Phil McCorry in 3rd. The Junior Senior men have not been beaten this season so the crew of  Ben Slater, Nick McCorry, Dan Renner and Greg Anderson were keen to keep their record going against the latest rivals from Hants  and Dorset. They had no reason to worry however as they took the lead from the turns and kept it right up to the finish line taking win No4 on the day.  The next race saw the Vet 40+ crew of  Steve Hopkins, Glen Payne,  Chris Doswell and Andy Bickers take 6 points as 1st CARA crew across the line and an impressive 2nd on the day. Unusually only one Bexhill sculler made it through the heats in the Men's  Novice  Sculls but Ben Slater had the race of his life to take 1st in the final and win No5 for Bexhill. The next race saw Kieran Cahill take 1st ahead of clubmates Asley Cahill  4th and P McCorry 7th in Mens Senior Sculls . With the sea now becoming very angry indeed the Men's Junior four crew of  Josh Howe, Jack Page, Dave Williams and Tony Page took 5th place in a race that started with 10 crews and ended with 6 boats still on the water, the easy winners Eastbourne actually crossed the line partly submerged!! Next up was the ladies Senior  Fours  and possibly the most exciting race of the day. As the A crew of Claire Hosie, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper and Eloise Hunt  battled with their Worthing rivals from the start it was clear this was going to be close. With the crowd cheering the girls on, Bexhill responded to the shouts of their cox and took a half length lead which in the final part of the race they extended futher to take win No7 for Bexhill, to the girls obvious delight. The scratch B crew of  Vinny Hourihane, Katy Skelton, Emily Willis and EJ Hunt claimed more points crossing the line in 5th place. The final race of the day proved however to go one further in the excitement stakes as the premier crews of the day took their places for the Men's senior Fours. The Portsmouth Grand Challege Cup, (or the Pompey Grand as it is affectionately known) is truely awesome in size and splendour and is quoted in the Southsea programme  as  'Commissioned in 1887, it's engraving means it now has a value as a work of art as well as being the most prized rowing trophy in the South Coast'. With this in mind it goes to show how much clubs and crews want to win this race. At the start the field seemed quite compact but by the turns The Bexhill A Crew of  Keiran and Ashley Cahill, Matt Hellier and Doug Holderway  had broken away from the pack along with  Itchen Imperial . There was hardly anything between the 2 boats with less than a quarter of the course to complete. Both clubs supporters were bellowing cries of encouragement to their respective crews. With a supreme effort Bexhill upped their rate and began to take the lead, they held on to take the race by a leng th and a half. The jubilation in the winning boat was  clear to see as the crew and their cox Rachel Garland knew that they were the first Bexhill crew ever to win this magnificent trophy in the clubs long history.

Club Captain Phil McCorry was delighted with the days haul which also took in the Grand Aggregate trophy, where Bexhill's rowers contributed to the most points for the day out of the 2   clubs present. An amazing feat considering it was proberly the least amount of rowers the club has travelled with so far this season. Tomorrow sees the club travel to Herne Bay and then Dover on Sunday, supporters are very welcome.

Bexhill Rowers have a Winning Weekend at Worthing and Bexhill

To everyone’s relief the weekend regattas at Worthing and Bexhill were not subject to cancellation by the sea conditions allowing Bexhill to cement there position at the top of the Coastal Area Rowing Association league table with a tremendous 11 wins and a plethora of point places throughout.

Although the sun shone brightly on Saturday a southerly breeze directly crossing the course made rowing quite tricky for the competitors. This was no problem for the Men’s Senior Pair crew of Doug Holderway and Ashley Cahill, taking the first win for Bexhill in front of Matt Hellier and Joe Pellet in 3rd and The McCorry brothers in 4th. Echoing the men Claire Hosie and Sophia Green stamped their authority with a win in the Ladies Senior Pairs, followed   home in 2nd by Jemma Cropper and Ellie Peebles and in 5th by the scratch crew of Eloise Hunt and Rachel Garland.

The Men’s Junior Senior four of Benjamin Slater, Nicholas McCorry, Daniel Renner and Gregory Anderson have been unbeatable this season and they carried on their winning ways with another impressive win whilst the B crew of Dave Williams, Jack Page, Paul Coone and Chris Phillips took 4th. With Kieran Cahill away at Henley the Senior Four were more than happy to see the return of Bexhill legend Mark Mitchell take his place, (he himself just returned from competing at the famous event). Joining his crewmates A Cahill, Holderway and Hellier their win made it 3 out of 3 so far this season. The ladies Senior 4 of Hosie, Green, Cropper and E Hunt repeated the men’s achievements by taking 1st over their rivals Worthing on their own course!

Bexhill’s last victory at Worthing came in the Men’s Senior Sculls, Mark Mitchell taking over from where he left off last year winning easily from A Cahill in 2nd. Bexhill’s rowers gained 2nd’s in the Vet’s over 40’s, Steve Hopkins, Greg Payne, Chris Doswell and Andy Bickers fought a close race. In the Men’s J/S Sculls it was 2nd, 3rd, 4th for Hellier, Phil McCorry and Holderway. Slater took a 4th in the Men’s Novice Sculls and the Under 14 Quad of Quinn, Matt, Golledge and Scrivener in their 2nd race together also took 4th place. Undoubtedly the most amazing incident of the day however was in the Men’s Junior 4 race. The A crew of Williams, Coone, Tony page and Phil Hunt were lying well in 3rd at the turns when the leading boats collided forcing a re row. Again at the turns also in 3rd place Williams blade tangled with the rope of the turn buoy making it impossible to row further. Without hesitation Williams jumped overboard, freed his blade and climbed back in the boat. The crew tried to catch up with the 6th place boat to get at least a point but narrowly missed out coming 7th out of 9.

Bexhill Regatta

And so the crews, boats and followers arrived at Bexhill in bright sunlight but with a strong wind coming in from the South West for the days racing. It did not take long for Bexhill to claim its first win. The third race of the day saw the Vet 40+ crew of Hopkins, Payne, Doswell and Bickers taking a deserved 1st place on home water with the B crew of Graham and Paul Dawes, Bob Balchin and Bob Phillips also bringing home points. Competing in the same race but in the over 50’s with a combined age of 230!! Pete Anderson, Dave Jones, T Page and P Hunt claimed a hard fought 3rd after rudder trouble at the turn. The second win of the day , and the most successful for the home club saw Hellier and Holderway battle for a dead heat followed over the line by P McCorry in 3rd in the Men’s Junior Sculls. After an exciting re run Hellier took the 1st place by a length and a half from Holderway in 2nd. The Men’s Junior Senior 4 of Slater, N McCorry, Renner and Anderson made it 4 unbeaten races this season with the B crew of Williams, J Page, Coone and Phillips taking 5th place. The equally victorious Ladies Senior 4 of Hosie, Green, Cropper and E Hunt claimed another 1st in a four length lead over Worthing A. The B crew of Garland, Peebles, Ellie Willis and Vinnie Hourihane picking up more points for Bexhill behind them. The club’s 5th win saw Mark Mitchell take 1st with A Cahill in 2nd and P McCorry 4th in the Men’s Senior Sculls. With 6points available for a win to 1 point for 6th it is just as important to gain a place to help the club’s league position. With this in mind Bexhill picked up a number of points in the days events. In the Under 14 Quad L.Quinn, A Scrivener, M Matt and M Golledge took a marvellous 2nd. A Cahill and Holderway also took 2nd with Pellet and Hellier 3rd in the Men’s Senior pair. In the days prestigious event , the Men’s Senior 4, the wind was whipping up the sea making conditions treacherous. So much so that the favourites, Bexhill A took on so much water they did well to finish 4th leaving Bexhill B, Slater, N McCorry, Renner and Anderson taking on the main contention for the lead but finishing a creditable 2nd. The C crew of Hopkins, Payne, Doswell and Bickers were less fortunate and sank only a third of the way down the course!

The sea conditions also played a part in the Ladies Senior Pair, the favourites Hosie and Green losing a seat in the tall waves leaving Cropper and Peebles to take points in 2nd and the Hunt twins Eloise and Emma Jane taking 5th. Further trouble came in the eventful Ladies Junior Pairs, after a long delay in the start and a re row Katie Skelton and Annabele Laity were rammed by a Shoreham boat causing a gaping hole below the waterline.

In the Ladies Junior 4 of Skelton , Laity, Izzy Bergin and Yaz Page took 5th whilst the Novices of Quinn,   Bergin, Skelton and Laity did one better coming 4th. The Men’s Novice 4 of Williams, J Page, Coone and Phillips gained 2 points by finishing 5th and in the Men’s Junior pairs saw T Page and P Hunt claim 4th from Josh Howe and Pepper in 5th . The Men’s Junior 4 A crew of Howe, Pepper, T Page and P Hunt took 5th in a very closely fought race. Finally the club’s efforts were rewarded with the receiving of the Senior Aggregate and Grand Aggregate Trophies.

It is an amazing fact that Bexhill entered around 50 rowers over the weekend with an age range of 13 to 78. The club would like to thank the family of Geoff Larkin for their continued sponsorship of the Bexhill Regatta and the beach inspector and Hastings Lifeguards for their help in making the event run safely. Next stop Southsea regatta tomorrow where the Kent and Sussex clubs join others from Hampshire and further West.

Bexhill Rowers Super  6 at Shoreham Sprints.

The South Westerly winds that have now cancelled all but 2 regattas so far this season claimed the Shoreham regatta this weekend but the organisers quickly arranged an alternative Sprints event in the River Adur harbour. The ‘Sprint’ meeting is usually held by the home club for home crews but Saturday saw all the Sussex clubs represented. Bexhill rowers claimed 6 wins and a number of 2nd places over the days event. The races were all straight 500 metre dashes  as compared to the usual 2000 at a regular regatta. The club’s first win came with Doug Holderway  taking the Men’s Junior Sculls. Win No2 followed in the Ladies Senior Pair with Ellie Peebles and Jemma Cropper taking 1st from Claire Hosie and Sophia Green in 2nd. Doug Holderway continued his winning ways this time partnered by Ashley Cahill in the Men’s Senior Pairs. The best race of the day for Bexhill came with the Men's Novice Sculls, a Bexhill 1,2 3. Greg Anderson coming in first  followed by Ben Slater and Alex Pepper.

It was Bexhill’s next two wins that were a little more special however as they were by two crews who had never tasted victory until now. Firstly the Ladies Novice Four of Katy Skelton, Annabelle Laity, Megan Rudd and Yasmin Page who maintained their lead from start to finish in a very close race. Next the Men’s Novice Four of  Dave Williams, Alex Pepper, Paul Coone and Chris Phillips got off to a flyer and finished 3 lengths ahead of their nearest rivals. The mens crew was  expertly coxed by club captain Phil McCorry with Rachel Garland skillfully seeing the girls home. Amongst other races of note were the Junior Ladies four where Skelton, Laity, Rudd and Y. Page stepped up a class to finish a creditable 2nd. The Men’s Junior Fours, of Williams, Pepper, Tony Page and Phillips came in a close second which should encourage them in their next proper regatta. In a very exciting race the Senior Ladies Four of Hosie, Green, Cropper and Eloise Hunt came 2nd to their fierce rivals from Worthing.  Lastly a special mention must go to Peter Anderson who at the tender age of 73, rowed excellently to finish second as part of  a scratch crew in the Men’s Veteran Fours.  The senior mens crew did not race as two of their crew are competing at the prestigious Henley regatta under the Bexhill and Eastbourne name.  The club visit Worthing on Saturday and then are at home for the Bexhill Regatta on Sunday (starting at 11 a.m.). Bexhillians are invited to come along to the prom between De La warr and the rowing Social club to cheer the club on.

BEXHILL ROWERS GET 6 OF THE BEST AT EASTBOURNE

Bexhill Rowing Club took the short journey to Eastbourne last Saturday for the 9th CARA regatta of the season . The sea on the south coast was calm and the sun was out making for an uninterupted day of rowing  where Bexhill would take 6 wins  and a plethora of places on the day. Their first victory came in the  Men’s Senior Sculls . With Kieran Cahill  looking comfortably in the lead in the final stage of the race ,   he suddenly slowed down due  to a sickness bug,  allowing Mark  Mitchell to pass him taking first followed by his brother Ashley Cahill taking 2nd  with Kieran crossing the line in 3rd and Phil McCorry taking 6th. Bexhill's 2nd win saw  Jemma Cropper  take 1st ahead of clubmate Vinnie Hourihane in 3rd in the ladies Sculls. There was an uncharacteristic long wait for the club's next win that saw the Men’s Junior Senior crew of Ben Slater,   Nick McCorry, Dan Renner and Greg Anderson make it 9 out of 9 wins in this category this season. Next up, the Men's Senior Sculls, where Matt Hellier took a 3 length win. Phil McCorry took 3rd and brother Nick McCorry 4th, Dan Renner took 6th after he had collided with another boat at the turns.   Win No4 and a 1-2 for Bexhill  saw Ashey Cahill and Doug Holdaway beat their clubmates Keiran Cahill and Matt Hellier in a very close race in the Men's Senior Pairs. The 6th and final victory for Bexhill saw the Men's Senior 4 A boat of A Cahill, D Holdaway, M Hellier and K Cahill hold off a  dogged fight by Deal to eventually win by two lengths. The B crew of Slater, N McCorry, Renner and Anderson taking 3rd from the C crew of  Steve Hopkins, Glen Payne, Chris Doswell and Andy Bickers in 4th. The club Captain Phil McCorry has asked his crews to try and get as many points they can this season as the magic 1000 points gets ever nearer, something no club in the Coast Amateur Rowing Association  has ever achieved. With this in mind the  rowers  answered thair captains call by taking a variety of placed finishes. In the Vets 40+ race  Hopkins,  Payne, Doswell and Bickers took 2nd whilst in the 50+ race Pete Anderson, Stanley Accrington, Tony Page and Phil Hunt  came in 3rd. The ladies Senior 4 ,usually contested by Bexhill A and Worthing threw a suprise where a Folkestone boat took 1st ahead of the Bexhill A of Eloise Hunt, Sophia Green, J Cropper and Claire Hosie in 2nd. Bexhill B, including Ellie Peebles, V Hourihane, Rachel Garland and Emily Willis took 4th. The men's Novice Fours saw Josh Howe, Jack Page John Ward and Chris Phillips take 4th whilst the Ladies Novice fours of Katie Skelton, Annabele Laity, Mahala Moore and Yaz Page finish in 3rd. Skelton and Laity took a creditable 3rd in the Ladies Junior pairs whilst back in the 4 boat with Y Page and Anna Marriot  they came in 4th in the Juniors race.  Greg Anderson took 2nd in the Men's Novice Sculls and in the last race of the day Hourihane and Willis rowed magnificently in their first ever  ladies doubles race taking 2nd place. As the day ended Bexhill returned home with the Grand Aggregate trophy and enough league points to keep the 1000 league points achievable. The club travel to Shoreham on Sunday,

Bexhill Rowers Rule the Waves at Deal and Dover.

Bexhill Rowing Club had two delightful days at Deal and Dover last weekend taking 15 wins, 4 separate championships and over 200 points back home with them. The sea on the south coast was calm as the rowers set of for Saturdays regatta at Deal, however on their arrival the east coast the wind was causing large waves and very bumpy conditions for rowing. The regatta went ahead however, much to the joy of Bexhill’s Ben Slater, who made it look oh so easy taking the Men’s Novice Sculls race by a massive 15 boat lengths from the 2nd place sculler and  club mate Greg Anderson, who took 3rd . The second victory came with the Men’s Junior sculls as club captain Phil McCorry lead by example followed home by Matt Hellier and Doug Holdaway in 2nd and 3rd and brother Nick McCorry in 5th. Win No3 came with the Ladies Senior 4’s of Claire Hosie, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper and Eloise Hunt in 1st with a well deserved 3rd for the B crew of Rachel Garland, Emma Peebles, Vinny Hourihane and Ellie Willis.  In the Men’s Junior Senior race the  crew of B. Slater,N McCorry, Dan Renner and Greg Anderson carried on their winning ways taking 1st  whilst the B crew of Josh Howe, Phil Hunt, Jack Page and Tony Page came in 5th.  Win No5 came in the Men’s Senior Sculls with Kieran Cahill comfortably beating a Folkestone sculler separating Bexhill’s Mark Mitchell in 3rd and P.McCorry 5th and Ashley Cahill taking 6th. In the Ladies Senior Pairs S Green and C Hosie regained their superiority in this event with a win over club mates J Cropper and R Garland in 2nd with E Hunt and E Peebles in 6th. Emulating the girls the Men’s Senior Pairs saw K Cahill and Matt Hellier take 1st with Ashley Cahill and D Holdaway in 3rd ahead of N and P McCorry in 5th. The big race of the day the Mens Senior Fours saw A Cahill, D Holdaway, M Hellier and K Cahill keep the home club Deal at bay and with some contact at the turns they had to wait for the umpire’s decision before opening the champagne to celebrate their Championship win and Bexhill’s 8th win of the day. The B crew of Slater, N McCorry, Renner and Anderson came in 4th. Other points came in The Vets 4’s with Steve Hopkins, Glen Payne, Chris Doswell and Andy Bickers taking 2nd another 2nd by  the Ladies Novice Four of Katie Skelton, Annabele Laity, Maxine Arbroath and Yaz Page. Laity and Skelton also took a 3rd in the Ladies Junior Pairs and finally there were 6th places for the Men’s Novice 4 of J Page, John Ward, Josh Howe and Chris Phillips and in the Junior 4 with Howe, P Hunt, T Page and C Phillips. And so onto a twice rearranged Dover where at last the sea was calm and they could put on a regatta.  Bexhill’s first win came in the Men’s Junior Sculls in a fabulously close finish Matt hellier beat his club captain Phil McCorry by inches across the line and also to take the Championship for this class. Bexhill’s dominance of this race was clearly shown as Doug Holdaway followed the 1st and 2nd places with 3rd ahead of Dan renner in 6th. Win No2 came in the Mens senior Sculls Matt Mitchell finding his old form by taking 1st from K Cahill in 2nd, A Cahill 4th and P McCorry 6th.  The Ladies Senior 4 of E Hunt, S Green,J Cropper and C Hosie made it a double for the weekend whilst  in the Men’s Senior 4 a fabulous 1-2 for Bexhill with the A crew of A and K Cahill, Holdaway and Hellier taking victory ahead of the B crew of Slater, N McCorry, Renner and Anderson. The B crew also took the club’s 5th  win of the day in the Men’s JS and look in a strong position to make it through the whole season with a victory at every regatta. The 6th and 7th victories came in the Men and Ladies Senior Pairs. First the Ladies  with Green and Hosie also winning their Championship, Garland and Crooper in 3rd and in the Men’s K Cahill and Hellier also winning their Championship followed by club mates N McCorry and Renner in 6th. Other point winners on the day were the Vets 4’s with Hopkins,  Payne, Doswell and Bickers taking 2nd  . Also taking a 2nd in the Mens Novice Sculls Alex Pepper rowing through and  beating club mate Anderson in 3rd. Pepper put in another great performance this time joining Howe in the Junior Pairs taking 2nd again  The Ladies Junior Four of Skelton, Laity, Atalie Scrivener and Megan Rudd took a respectable 3rd place with Laity and Skelton also taking a 5th  in the Ladies Junior Pairs. Finally in the Mixed Junior under 14  quads Max Cooledge, Martyn Matt, Laura Quinn and Atalie Scrivener came in 3rd in the last race of a long rowing weekend.

8 WINS AT FOLKESTONE

FOLKESTONE REGATTA  REPORT  5/6/11

After the disappointment of the cancelation of Saturday's racing at Dover due to high winds, the Bexhill Rowing Club crews and followers made the trip to a wet and windy Sandgate for the Folkestone regatta. Following their successes at Worthing confidence was high, this being justified by their terrific eight wins throughout the days events. This was not a typical Summers day, the rain was lashing down and the sea was as rough as you can get without the regatta being called off. However the inclement weather did not put off the hearty crowd of rowers and friends gathered from the nine clubs attending the days races.
Bexhill's first win came in the Men's Senior Sculls , Kieran Cahill again showing his class at this event with his 2nd win out of 2 this season followed by brother Ashley in 2nd and Club Captain Phil McCorry gaining 2 club points in 5th. Next saw the Ladies Senior 4 of Eloise Hunt, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper and Claire Hosie, coxed by P McCorry, take 1st from a dogged Worthing Crew that they eventually shook off their tales to win by a length. The B crew of Emma Jane Hunt, Ellie Peebles, Vinny Hourihane and Emily Willis coxed by A Bickers grabbed the last point available coming home in 6th.
Bexhill's third win  was in the Men's Junior Sculls with Doug Holderway taking 1st from Matt Hellier in 3rd and P McCorry in 5th. Incidentally this sets up an interesting next meeting as Holderway and Hellier now have one win each in this event for the Championship. Win four was taken with relative ease by the Junior Senior 4 of Ben Slater, Nick McCorry, Dan Renner, and Greg Anderson coxed by B Povey, It will take a lot of work from any other crew to beat this four in this category by the end of the season. They were followed in 5th by the hastily assembled B crew of Chris Phillips, Paul Coone, Tony Page and Charles Gordon-Harris, coxed by A Bickers.
The Ladies were back again  with the partnership of Hosie and Green continuing to show their strength taking Bexhill's 5th win with Cropper and Peebles making it a 1-2 in the Senior Pairs and the Hunt twins taking a point in 6th. Echoing  the ladies, Bexhill took another 1-2, this time  in the Men's Senior Pairs, Hellier and K Cahill taking top spot from C Cahill and Holderway with the McCorry brothers taking 6th place.
The big race of the day was as always the Men's Senior 4. At Worthing the previous race saw Bexhill A almost unchallenged to take their win but Folkestone, now being the home club, were up for a race. The start of a Men's Senior 4 event is nearly always controversial and the umpire, Bexhill's Steven Doswell maintained great character to eventually get the crews in a straight line after much jostling between the markers. As they approached the last 500 metres there was half a length between Bexhill A and Folkestone and this distance was maintained until in the last 50 metres. The Bexhill A of The Cahill brothers, Holderway and Hellier upped their rate to eventually win by 3 lengths. The B crew of Slater, N.McCorry, Renner and Anderson performed marvellously to take 4th and the C crew of Vet's Steve Hopkins, Greg Payne, Chris Doswell and Andy Bickers took the last point in 6th.
The final win of the day also saw the largest win margin with Jemma Cropper taking 1st place in the Ladies sculls by a good 20 lengths from the nearest competitor.
The Vet's of Hopkins, Bickers, Doswell, and Payne gained 5 points for the club finishing in 2nd place in the Vets 40+ race. In the Men's Novice Sculls Slater took a 3rd and Anderson 5th and in the Men's Junior pairs Alex Pepper and T Page in their first pair race together took 3 points with 4th place. The last points taken by the club was in the Men's Junior 4, where Pepper, T Page, J Page and P Hunt  came in 5th. Finally in the Men's Novice 4 J.Page C Phillips C Gordon-Harris and P Coone came in 7th out of 9 in their first race together, indeed this was Coone and Phillips first ever race!

BEXHILL ROWERS WORTH THEIR WINS AT WORTHING

Bexhill’s rowers got the season off to a fine start at Worthing Regatta last Saturday with a fine display winning 7 races and a host of 2nd and 3rds. After a cloudy start, which saw the u16’s quad races begin the days events, the sun shone brightly throughout the day. The crew of M.Moore, L.Quinn, H.Sigfusdottir, A.Scrivener opened the challenge for Bexhill, finishing 3rd in the Ladies U16 Ladies Quad sculls then Quinn, Scrivener, were joined by Max Coolege and Martyn Matt to finish 3rd in the U14 Mixed Quad sculls.

Bexhill’s first win came in the Junior/Senior 4’s with Ben Slater, Greg Anderson, Dan Renner and Nick McCorry making it all look so easy. The B crew of Dave Williams, Phil Hunt, Tony Page and John Ward (in his 2nd race ever), did well to stay nearby to

the 3rd place boat to finish 4th.

The most exciting race of the day was undoubtedly the Novice Sculls race. Ben Slater was about to take over the 1st position when a wave took his blade from his hand and he nearly tipped over at a cost of 5 lengths to his rival. With less than 50 metres

remaining and urged on by the Bexhill crowd and teammates he edged nearer and nearer, but as they both crossed the line Slater was judged to have lost by half a canvas, ( less than a meter). He was followed shortly after by Greg Anderson in 3rd place.

The main event of the day saw the Bexhill A crew of Keiran Cahill, Ashley Cahill, Matt Hellier and Doug Holderway win easily by 5 lengths, with the B crew of Slater, Anderson, N McCorry and Renner take 5th , this after Slater and Anderson had to climb

out of their sculls and climb straight into their 4 boat. The C Crew of Andy Bickers , Greg Payne, Chris Doswell and Dave Jones take the last point on offer with 6th place.

The 3rd win of the day came in the Mens Junior Sculls , Hellier taking first place ahead of Holderway in 2nd and Phil McCorry claiming the final point in 6th, after becoming tangled with a loose buoy on the turns. Another 1-2 for Bexhill arrived with K.Cahill

taking 1st place and brother Ashley in second in the Mens Senior sculls. Win Number 5 came with the Ladies Senior 4 emulating the men, Claire Hosie Jemma Cropper, Sophia Green and Eloise Hunt, winning by 4 lenghts, beating the current champions

Worthing at their home regatta.

The 6th win saw K Cahill and Hellier looking very competent in the Mens Senior Pairs, followed by Holderway and A Cahill improving vastly on their performance at the Viking Shield previously, and finishing in 2nd place.  The final victory of the day was

taken by Hosie and Green in the Ladies senior Pair, winning by a huge margin from the rest of the competitors. Cropper and Peebles took 3rd and the Hunt twins of Eloise and Emma Jane claimed 2 points for the club with 5th place.

In the Veteran 40+ Fours race, Bickers, Payne, Doswell and Jones took a creditable 2nd place for Bexhill. The Mens Novice fours saw Williams, Jack Page, Charles Gordon-Harris and John Ward take 8th from 10 with the juniors of Williams, T.Page,

Gordon-Harris and J.Page echo this with another 8th from 10 placing. The ladies Novice 4 of Kate Skelton, Annabele Laity, Megan Rudd and Yaz Page had a terrible start and to make matters worse a bad turn but managed to creep back up the field of 10

to take 4th spot whilst the B crew of Moore, Light, Sigfusdottir and Marriott came in 9th. In the Ladies Junior fours the same 2 crews Skelton, Laity, Rudd and Y. Page came in 5th with Moore, Light Sigfusdottir and Marriott came in 9th out of 10 again.

These 2 crews like the mens Novice/Junior crews will improve with practice and have had little time on the water together. Finally the only Bexhill crew in the 9 boats of the Mens Junior Pairs saw the over 50 year olds Phil Hunt and T. Page complete the

course in 8th position.

BEXHILL TAKE 9 WINS OUT OF 12 AT VIKING SHIELD

Bexhill Rowing Club headed to Hern Bay on Saturday to race in the Viking Shield Regatta which is the last of the pre season races before the club heads to Worthing in two weeks time. It is the first time crews get a taste of the likely competition for the up and coming season as well as seeing if their hard work winter training has paid off. For Bexhill the day couldn't have gone any better, out of the 17 races on the day, the club entered 12 and won and impressive 9 of these. This was followed by three 2nds and two 3rd's.

First crew up was Mahala Moore, Rihanna Light, Katie Skelton and a substitute rower from Worthing in the Ladies Novice Four. This was the girls first ever race, claiming an impressive 3rd place following by a 5th place in the Ladies Junior Fours. The Mens Senior Sculls was a battle between the Cahill Brothers with Kieran coming 1st, followed by Ashley in 2nd and Phil McCorry in 4th.

Having moved up to the Junior/Senior Status, the Mens Championship Junior crew of 2010 of Greg Anderson, Dan Renner and Ben Slater were joined by Nick McCorry to contest the second fastest race of the day, the crew came out on top winning comfortably from Eastbourne. Jack Page and David Williams in their first race were joined by Alex Pepper and Phil Hunt, doing very well to claim 6th place but went one better in the Mens Junior to claim 5th pace.

Bexhill has a strong Ladies squad this year and fielded two crews in the Ladies Senior Fours, with the A crew of Claire Hosie, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper and Eloise Hunt Claiming 1st place and the newly formed B crew of Rachel Garland, Ellie Peebles, Vinny Hourihane and Emily White claiming 4th. The ladies then split up into pairs with Claire and Spohia racing against Jemma and Ellie. Both crews led an eventful race at different stages which included crashes and crews getting caught up at the turns. Eventually Claire and Spohia came through to win the race followed up by Jemma and Ellie in 2nd.

Kieran Cahill and Matt Hellier looked comfortable in the Mens Senior pairs winning from a difficult lane draw on the outside, following up by Doug Holdaway and Ashley Cahill in 6th who were involved in a couple of crashes in the race. After a one race gap, Matt then went onto win the Men's Junior Sculls followed by Phil McCorry claiming 3rd place.

Onto the Men's Senior Fours Bexhill fielded three crews with the A crew of Ashley Cahill, Doug Holdaway, Matt Hellier and Kieran Cahill, winning by 5 lengths. The J/s crew picked up 5th, with the vets taking 7th.

Ben Slater won the mens novice sculls, backed up by crew mate Greg Anderson with Alex Pepper claiming a very good 4th place.

One of the closest races of the day was the mens veteran fours where the crew of Andy Bickers, Chris Doswell, Glenn Payne and Dave Jones pulling away at the finish to win by 1 and 1/2 lengths

Bexhill Rowers  Men and Women crews are  top two at Adur Head Regatta.

A cool Spring Mothering Sunday saw Bexhill Rowers out in force to take 7 race victories at the annual regatta at Shoreham's river Adur last week. The event showed that it looks likely we will be a prominent force again this season as the Men's Senior 4  of Kieran Cahill, Matt Hellier, Doug Holderway and Ashley Cahill, coxed by Ben Slater, finished the 3.5k course in the fastest time of the day of 13mins.20secs to take 1st place overall . By far the most notable crew of the day however were the Bexhill Senior Women's Four of  Claire Hosie, Sophia Green, Jemma Cropper and Elouise Hunt with their cox Phil McCorry. Together they crossed the line in a time of 14.14 thus taking 2nd overall place ahead of all other crews including male senior junior and vet crews!! Both these crews won their respective divisions and categories. Bexhill's third win came with the Men's Veteran coxed 4's of Andy Bickers, Chris Doswell, Steve Hopkins and Glen Payne in a time of 14.18. The next winner was Gemma Cropper taking the Ladies Sculls followed by win number 5 by Phil McCorry in the  Men's Junior Sculls taking the title of fastest coastal sculler and beating Senior Rowers on the day! K. Cahill and M Hellier won the Men's Senior Pairs with Bexhill's final success coming in the Ladies Pairs, S.Green and C Hosie amazingly sharing the same time and so joint 1st with a Worthing crew. As well as these victories other notable performances from Bexhill's rowers came from  the Ladies Novice Four of Katie Skelton, Annabelle Laity, Megan Rudd and Crystal Preston in their very first competitive race,  they finished in 2nd place behind a vastly more experienced Southsea crew. A hastily made up crew of Alex Pepper, Tony Page, Dave Williams, (in his 1st race) and Phil Hunt  took 3rd place in the Junior Men's 4's. Also taking a couple of 3rds were the Men's Senior pair D Holderway and A Cahill, after experiencing a few technical problems with their boat and Ben Slater 3rd Junior Sculler across the line. Finally Elouise and Emma Hunt took a 4th in the Ladies Pairs concluding a great day for Bexhill.

Huge thanks to BASALA for our new Junior Quad 4 boat.
