Folkestone Regatta 26.7.08
Round 3 of the coastal rowing season got underway on Saturday in a warm & sunny Folkestone. Bexhill scored 2 race wins and a host of 2nd & 3rd places.
Win No1 came in the Men's Junior Sculls , ash Cahill putting on a strong performance to win & being pushed all the way to the line by Doug Holderway in the other Bexhill scull finishing 2nd, Phil McCorry came home to finish 5th.
Win No2 went again to Mark Mitchell in the Mens Senior Sculls. Such is Mark's dominance he was clearly ahead of the field just 500 mtres into the 200 m race. Club mate Kieran Cahill finished 3rd being just edged out by a rival sculler from Herne Bay. Club Captain Andy Bickers rounded off the points haul by taking the last point on offer in 6th place.
Bexhill's senior Ladies crew of Holly Makin, Rachel Cripps, rachel Garland, Jemma Cropper coxed by Jes Campbell had a good row and finished in 2nd position in just their 2nd race together.
Jemma Cropper had her first race this year in the Ladies Single Sculls. Jemma showed really well early on actually leading the race but with conditions not ideal for sculling had to concede the lead on the return leg eventually crossing the line in 2nd place, a promising start to her sculling career.
Bexhill had 2 men's seniour 4 crews in the final but such was the fierce competition 2nd & 6th were the best they could achieve. The A crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Matt Hellier, Kieran Cahill & cox Jes Cambell lead till just before the 1/2 way turns but could not find the rhythm or sea conditions to keep their place. The B crew of Phil McCorry, Joe Pellett, Ash Cahill, Andy Bickers & Cox Yaz Page despite never having rowed together had a good race long battle with a vastly more experienced Folkestone crew but eventually couldn't advance past 6th place.
The Men's Junior 4 of Ash Sutton, Dan Renner, Matt Richard and James Copper had an amazing row to finish 2nd! They may have won but for conceding to Deal in avoiding a collision. A great result considering it was only their 2nd row together. In the Ladies Junior 4's Bexhill was forced to put out a hastily assembled crew due to absence whilst the holiday season is on. rebecca Dawes, Eloise Hunt, hannah Ruddock and Yaz page started well keeping the leading crews in their reach. Amazingly on the return leg Bexhill were just half a boat length down on Championship leaders eastbourne and kept the crowd roaring encouragement right up to the line narrowly beaten into 2nd. This was an amazing result and with 8 more regattas to go the chance of another championship victory gives the trainers and captain something to think about before next weekend.
In the Men's Senior Pairs Mark & Matt Mitchell were early leaders but disaster struck on the way to the turns when a nagging back injury to Matt forced them to retire. Kieran Cahill and Matt Hellier pushed hard to take up the race for Bexhill finnishing 3rd. Phil & Nick McCorry came in 5th with Andy Bickers & Darren Mitchell just out of the points in 7th.
Dan Renner & Joe Pellett lined up for Bexhill in the Men's Novice Sculls final, Dan in only his third sculing race came in an unbelievable 3rd with Joe in 7th.
The men's Novice 4's of Jasper Beutick, Tony Page, Ash Sutton and James Copper managed 4th closely followed by the second crew of Matt Richard, Phil Hunt,Alex Pepper and Greg Anderson in 5th

The last two coastal rowing regattas of 2008 were held last weekend, with Herne Bay Kent Saturday and Eastbourne Sunday. Both days provided choppy conditions and a total of 7 wins 6 seconds. This was enough for Bexhill to again clinch the Association Grand Aggregate (Total wins) and League (Total points).

The first win at Herne Bay was courtesy of the Ladies Novice four. Arabella MacDonald, Emma-Jane Hunt, Eloise Hunt, Vinny Hourihane and cox Jess Campbell won commandingly, never being lead the whole race. Backing them up in fourth was the crew of Lauren Moyse, Angharad Morgan, Yaz Page and Brogan Carpenter.

Next up in the Men’s Junior sculls win number two with Ash Cahill making it 7 wins in 7 races. He was backed up by Phil McCorry in second place.

The third win was in the Men’s senior sculls. With Kieran Cahill taking his first senior win. His brother Ash in his first senior race finished a creditable third.

Bexhill entered a crew in the junior under 16 quad sculls event which is to encourage young rowers to the sport. The crew consisted of Lauren Moyse, Anghard Morgan, Yaz Page and Brogan Carpenter finishing an excellent second.

Kieran Cahill and Matt Hellier came home third with Ash Cahill and Phil McCorry fourth in the Men’s senior pairs.

Other third and fourth places were gained in the Men’s Novice sculls. Matt Hellier gaining the upper hand over Dan Renner but both were within 1 boat length of the eventual winners as they crossed the line.

Twin sisters Emma-Jane and Eloise Hunt had an excellent if eventful race in the Ladies Senior Pairs. They tangled with a Herne Bay crew just before the line but such was the direction they collided that they went over the line sideways but ahead in third place.

Men’s Junior Senior four of Phil Hunt, Tony Page, James Copper and Ian Allen produced another good results with a third considering half of the crew was made up of novices and the other half juniors. The same crew but with Tony Page replacing Hunt finished fourth in the junior fours event.

Ladies Junior fours and Men’s senior fours both produced 4th and 5th places. The Ladies crew of Arabella MacDonald, Emma-Jane Hunt, Eloise Hunt and Vinny Hourihane ahead of Lauren Moyse, Anghard Morgan, Yaz Page and Brogan Carpenter. The Men’s crews of Andy Bickers, Joe Pellett, Matt Hellier and Kieran Cahill ahead of Phil McCorry, Nick McCorry, Ian Allen and Ash Cahill.

A fourth place was achieved in the Men’s Junior pairs with Dan Renner and James Copper and the men’s Veteran fours with Bob Balchin, Paul Dawes, Graham Dawes and Glen Payne scored the last point in sixth.

Moving on to Eastbourne the results continued.

The first and most important win of the day was in the men’s senior pairs. Bexhill were 4-3 up with just this race to go. Mark Mitchell and Kieran Cahill Had to work hard to gain a lead to the turns but pulled a 3 boat length lead on the way back and just sat on second place. This was enough to retain the championship. Nick and Phil McCorry finished in fourth with Matt Hellier and Ian Allen in sixth.

Matt Hellier won his first Novice sculls race. He was never lead over the whole race, club mate Dan Renner finished third and Nick McCorry fourth.

Mark Mitchell rounded off the season with his seventh win in the Men’s senior sculls, but had one of his toughest battles to date. The seventh fasted sculler in the Great Britain rowing squad was on the water. They were neck and neck at the turns but Mark showed what a great champion he was by pulling two lengths clear to remain unbeaten this year. Ash Cahill finished third with Chris Doswell in fifth.

Bexhill demonstrated it growing junior squad by entering two crews in the junior under 16 quad sculls. The A crew of Megan Milarski, Anghard Morgan, Yaz Page and Brogan Carpenter won the event with the B crew of Lauren Moyse, Liam Midwinter, Alex Hunt and Alex Pepper finishing an excellent second.

Both the novice men and novice ladies had great results finishing second in their respective events. Ladies were Megan Milarski, Angharad Morgan, Yaz Page and Brogan Carpenter and in the men’s Ian Allen, Matt Richard, Phil Hunt and Alex Pepper.

Ash Cahill was aiming to finish his championship season with a win in the men’s junior sculls but was up against the same opponent as Mitchell raced earlier. But rowing against what is in effect a professional rower proved too much of a challenge and he had to settle for second. He was backed up by Phil McCorry who finished third.

Bexhill had a ladies senior four entry made up of two seniors, one novice and a junior rower. Rachel Cripps, Arabella MacDonald, Hannah Ruddock and Jes Campbell had a fantastic row to finish third and were never further away than a boat length from eventual winners Deal.

The men’s Veteran four of Bob Balchin, Paul Dawes, Graham Dawes and Glen Payne scored had a better row to finish third in a close fought battle with hosts Eastbourne.

The ladies junior fours produced third and fifth places. The newly promoted A crew of Eloise Hunt, Emma-Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock and Vinny Hourihane showed well and if together next year will be in a shout of the championship. The B crew of Lauren Moyse, Arabella MacDonald, Yaz Page and Brogan Carpenter scored two more league points with their result.

The Men’s senior fours crews of Mark Mitchell, Joe Pellett, Matt Hellier and Paul Dawes finished fourth ahead of Phil McCorry, Nick McCorry, Ian Allen and Ash Cahill in fifth.

A new men’s junior pairing of Dan Renner and Matt Richard finish fourth. Then in the junior fours Renner and Richard combined with Ian Allen and Tony Page to come home fourth with the other crew of Phil Hunt, Alex Pepper, Greg Anderson and Patrick Stickland who was in his first ever race in seventh.

The last points of the day came in the ladies senior pairs with a fifth place for Hannah Ruddock and Eloise Hunt.

XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />Hove for the 1st Coastal Rowing Association regatta of the 2008 season. With 35 rowers, many of them new novice’s the nerves were showing after the dominance of last year. But soon the previous seasons form was starting to be repeated. 6 wins, 3 seconds, 4 thirds, 3 aggregate trophies and many points scoring places confirmed Bexhill are again the club to beat.

Win number one came in the Men’s Senior pairs, where Mark & Matt Mitchell came home first despite a nagging back injury to Matt. Close behind in third place were Kieran Cahill & Matt Hellier.

Next up was junior sculls with Ash Cahill dominating to finish 6 boat lengths ahead for his maiden junior win. He was backed up with a fine third for Phil McCorry

Win 3 came from the Men’s novice fours of Jasper Beutick, Tony Page, Ash Sutton, James Copper & cox Jess Campbell. They now only need one more win to put them up to junior status.

Win 4 went again to Mark Mitchell. Despite early pressure from club mate Kieran Cahill Mark took victory, Kieran finished close behind in second.

The next win came courtesy of Nick McCorry who score his first ever sculling win in the Men’s novice sculls. He lead from start to finish and was never challenged finishing over five boat lengths in front. One more win is required to move him up to junior sculls.

The sixth and final race win came in the men’s senior fours, but this time it was a one two finish. A collision at the turns had halted the first attempt so all rowers prepared to race again. The A crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Matt Hellier, Matt Mitchell & cox Jess Campbell lead off the start and kept it that way winning by 6 boat lengths over the Bexhill B crew of Phil McCorry, Nick McCorry, Ash Cahill, Kieran Cahill & cox Yaz Page. This was Bexhill’s best result in senior fours for many years and shows the strength in depth of the senior rowers.

With the novice rowers becoming more proficient Club Captain Andy Bickers had entered two boats in the men’s junior pairs. It paid off with a surprising but magnificent second place for James Copper and Dan Renner.

The Mens Junior fours also threw up a surprise result. The crew of Phil Hunt, Dan Renner, Jasper Beutick, Alex Pepper & cox Andy Bickers finished third, but not before the rudder strings becoming untied soon after the start. With a quick stop to retie they were off but now in last place. But by halfway they had made their way to fifth position. They made up another two place before the finish line and were over the moon at such a comeback.

Bexhill had twelve novice ladies to fill three boats in both the Ladies Novice and Junior fours. In each of the events the results were the same. In fourth were Sophie White, Sophia Green, Hannah Ruddock & Vinnie Hourihane, Sixth were Megan Milarski, Angharad Morgan, Brogan Carpenter & Yaz Page and in eighth were Alex Hunt, Lucy Sangster, Eloise Hunt & Emma Jane Hunt.

Bexhill also had a Quad junior 16 boats out for the first time. This race is for youngsters to learn to scull in a more stable boat and still be able to race. The mixed crew of Alex Pepper, Yaz Page, James Copper & Sophia Green and they finished in third.

The Veteran four of Bob Balchin, Paul Dawes, Graham Dawes & Glen Payne had a tough battle with a Herne Bay crew and came in fifth.

SOUTHSEA Regatta 12 July 08

With a month of not racing because of the summers extra windy weather Bexhill Rowing Club travelled the 100 miles along the coast to an overcast and breezy Southsea for the largest coastal rowing regatta in the country and round 2 of the 2008 season. With such a long break in racing, expecting the unexpected was going to be hard, worse still was the fact that the other rowing association from Hampshire & Dorset have had 6 regattas so the competition was going to be extremely tough. Never the less Bexhill produced 3 1-2 results, 3 thirds, 1 aggregate trophy and many points scoring places. Also to note is the Grand aggregate trophy has now been won by Bexhill for 3 years running.Win number one came in the Men’s Senior pairs, where Mark & Matt Mitchell came home first very close behind in 2nd place were Kieran Cahill & Matt Hellier who pushed there more experienced club mates all the way to the line. This was after a re-row where in the previous race the Cahill / Hellier combination had been leading.

Next up was junior sculls with Ash Cahill putting on a strong performance to win and being push all the way to the line by Doug Holderway in the other Bexhill scull. Phil McCorry came home to finish 7th.

Win 3 went again to Mark Mitchell in the msn’s senior sculls. Despite early pressure from club mate Kieran Cahill Mark took victory, Kieran finished close behind in second giving Bexhill it’s third one two finish. Chris Doswell managed to make the cut into the final and finish 7th.

The Men’s novice fours of Phil Hunt, Tony Page, Ash Sutton and James Copper qualified for the final and came home a creditable 3rd.

Bexhill’s new Senior Ladies crew of Holly Makin, Rachel Cripps, Rachel Garland, Jemma Cropper coxed by Phil McCorry had to put up with a re-row after rowing half a race and collisions at the turns by others to finish a promising 3rd.

Bexhill had a large contingent of novice ladies to fill two boats in both the Ladies Novice and Junior fours. In the novice events crew of Eloise Hunt, Emma Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock and Vinnie Hourihane made the final and finished 3rd. The other crew of Megan Milarski, Alex Hunt, Brogan Carpenter and Yaz Page just missed out on reaching the final. In the Junior ladies event Eloise Hunt, Emma Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock and Vinnie Hourihane finished 5th then Megan Milarski, Alex Hunt, Brogan Carpenter and Yaz Page finished 8th.

Nick McCorry & Joe Pellett lined up for Bexhill in the Men’s novice sculls final. Nick went on to finish in 4th place and Joe 7th.

Bexhill were the only club to have two men’s senior fours crews in the final, but such was the fierce competition 5th and 6th places were the best they could achieve. A collision at the turns had halted the first race and the re-start had the Bexhill crews in 1st and 2nd places off the start. The A crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Matt Hellier, Matt Mitchell lead the Bexhill B crew of Phil McCorry, Nick McCorry, Ash Cahill, Kieran Cahill & cox Yaz Page. But this being the top race of the day other crews from Ryde & Southampton managed to pull clear. The A & B crews maintained this order at the line.

After a magnificent debut in the men’s junior pair at the last regatta it was going to be tough to match in this regatta with so many other competitors but after both pairs qualified for the final James Copper, Dan Renner managed a creditable 4th place and Tony Page with Will Miller finished in 8th.

In the Ladies Senior pairs Holly Makin, Rachel Garland had a good battle with the other Bexhill pair of Rachel Cripps and Rebecca Dawes to finish 3rd and 4th respectively.

The Ladies Junior pair of Hunt twins Eloise and Emma Jane in only their second race came home in 4th position.

Bexhill had a crew in the men’s junior senior fours for the first time this year. Jasper Beutick, Phil Hunt, Matt Richard, Will Miller finished 7th in the heat but this being Matt Richards first ever coastal rowing race this bodes well for the future.

The Men’s junior fours crew of Ash Sutton, Dan Renner, Matt Richard, and James Copper just missed out on a place in the final by finishing 5th in the heat.

The Veteran four of Bob Balchin, Chris Doswell, Graham Dawes & Glen Payne had a tough battle with a

xml:namespace prefix = st1 />

XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />Herne Bay crew including a collision and came home in 6th in the last points scoring position.

Balchin & Dawes then teamed up in the over 50 veteran fours with 2 rowers from Herne Bay to finish in 2nd.

Deal Rowing Regatta Saturday 2nd August 2008.

Round four of the coastal rowing season got underway on Saturday in a dull and damp

xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Deal, Kent. Despite being a few members down Bexhill was back to winning ways. Scoring 6 race wins, 2 seconds, 3 thirds and a host of points scoring places.

Win number one came in the Ladies Senior pairs. Holly Makin and Rachel Garland powered to their maiden senior win in style. With extreme windy conditions requiring all their skills to just finish, they proved all the hard winters training was worth every session. Roll on next week!

The second win came in the Men’s senior pairs; Kieran Cahill & Matt Hellier emulated the ladies in scoring their first senior pairs victory. They went into the turn slightly down but came out level, then powered past in the sprint to the line. Mark Mitchell paired up for the first time with Doug Holderway and managed forth position with Andy Bickers & Darren Mitchell just out of the points in seventh.

The Men’s novice fours of Jasper Beutick, Tony Page, Ash Sutton and James Copper have now secured junior status by getting their second win of the year. It was not all plain sailing though as the race to the line was as close as ever with the crews virtually clashing blades but the sheer determination of the Bexhill crew proved too much for hosts Deal.

Ash Cahill continued his dominance of the Men’s junior sculls with win number four out of four. He was backed up by Phil McCorry in third and Doug Holderway in fifth.

Win 5 went again to Mark Mitchell in the men’s senior sculls. This time club mate Kieran Cahill pushed him all the way finishing in second. Club captain Andy Bickers finished fifth with Chris Doswell in seventh.

Jemma Cropper in her second Ladies single sculls race won in dominant style with over 20 boats lengths back to her nearest competitor. Jemma pushed from the start and lead from start to finish securing Bexhill’s sixth win of the day from fifteen events.

James Copper paired up with Ash Sutton for the first time this year and raced strongly to clinch second place.

Bexhill had two men’s senior fours crews in the final, but such was the fierce competition 3rd and 8th places were the best they could achieve. The ‘A’ crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Matt Hellier, Kieran Cahill and Jes Campbell battled hard with a regular Herne Bay crew but also some German internationals that had been imported which seemed to go against the spirit of the Coastal Amateur Rowing Association.

Bexhill’s Senior Ladies crew of Holly Makin, Rachel Cripps, Rachel Garland, Jemma Cropper had a good row and finished in third position despite an unfavourable outside draw, exposed to much windier and rougher conditions.

Bexhill’s Ladies contingent were down in numbers so a hastily assembled novice four of Hannah Ruddock, Megan Milarski, Brogan Carpenter and Angharad Morgan finished in 4th place which was a great result. The same crew but with Carpenter being replaced by Lauren Moyse went on to score two league points in the higher junior ladies fours.

Bexhill had a crew in the men’s junior senior fours made entirely of novice rowers. Ash Sutton, Tony Page, James Copper, Alex Pepper finished fourth.

Bexhill had a crew in the men’s junior fours again consisting of novice rowers. Ash Sutton, Tony Page, Greg Anderson, Alex Pepper finished sixth in the final scoring another point for the club.

Matt Hellier managed to score a point with sixth place in the men’s novice sculls final.

The Veteran four of Bob Balchin, Paul Dawes, Graham Dawes & Glen Payne scored the final points placing with 6th position
