SOUTHSEA Regatta 12 July 08
With a month of not racing because of the summers extra windy weather Bexhill Rowing Club travelled the 100 miles along the coast to an overcast and breezy Southsea for the largest coastal rowing regatta in the country and round 2 of the 2008 season. With such a long break in racing, expecting the unexpected was going to be hard, worse still was the fact that the other rowing association from Hampshire & Dorset have had 6 regattas so the competition was going to be extremely tough. Never the less Bexhill produced 3 1-2 results, 3 thirds, 1 aggregate trophy and many points scoring places. Also to note is the Grand aggregate trophy has now been won by Bexhill for 3 years running.Win number one came in the Men’s Senior pairs, where Mark & Matt Mitchell came home first very close behind in 2nd place were Kieran Cahill & Matt Hellier who pushed there more experienced club mates all the way to the line. This was after a re-row where in the previous race the Cahill / Hellier combination had been leading.

Next up was junior sculls with Ash Cahill putting on a strong performance to win and being push all the way to the line by Doug Holderway in the other Bexhill scull. Phil McCorry came home to finish 7th.
Win 3 went again to Mark Mitchell in the msn’s senior sculls. Despite early pressure from club mate Kieran Cahill Mark took victory, Kieran finished close behind in second giving Bexhill it’s third one two finish. Chris Doswell managed to make the cut into the final and finish 7th.
The Men’s novice fours of Phil Hunt, Tony Page, Ash Sutton and James Copper qualified for the final and came home a creditable 3rd.
Bexhill’s new Senior Ladies crew of Holly Makin, Rachel Cripps, Rachel Garland, Jemma Cropper coxed by Phil McCorry had to put up with a re-row after rowing half a race and collisions at the turns by others to finish a promising 3rd.
Bexhill had a large contingent of novice ladies to fill two boats in both the Ladies Novice and Junior fours. In the novice events crew of Eloise Hunt, Emma Jane Hunt, Hannah Ruddock and Vinnie Hourihane made the final and finished 3rd. The other crew of Megan Milarski, Alex Hunt, Brogan Carpenter and Yaz Page just missed out on reaching the final. Bexhill were the only club to have two men’s senior fours crews in the final, but such was the fierce competition 5th and 6th places were the best they could achieve. A collision at the turns had halted the first race and the re-start had the Bexhill crews in 1st and 2nd places off the start. The A crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Matt Hellier, Matt Mitchell lead the Bexhill B crew of Phil McCorry, Nick McCorry, Ash Cahill, Kieran Cahill & cox Yaz Page. But this being the top race of the day other crews from Ryde & Southampton managed to pull clear. The A & B crews maintained this order at the line.
After a magnificent debut in the men’s junior pair at the last regatta it was going to be tough to match in this regatta with so many other competitors but after both pairs qualified for the final James Copper, Dan Renner managed a creditable 4th place and Tony Page with Will Miller finished in 8th.
In the Ladies Senior pairs Holly Makin, Rachel Garland had a good battle with the other Bexhill pair of Rachel Cripps and Rebecca Dawes to finish 3rd and 4th respectively.
The Ladies Junior pair of Hunt twins Eloise and Emma Jane in only their second race came home in 4th position.
Bexhill had a crew in the men’s junior senior fours for the first time this year. Jasper Beutick, Phil Hunt, Matt Richard, Will Miller finished 7th in the heat but this being Matt Richards first ever coastal rowing race this bodes well for the future.
The Men’s junior fours crew of Ash Sutton, Dan Renner, Matt Richard, and James Copper just missed out on a place in the final by finishing 5th in the heat.
The Veteran four of Bob Balchin, Chris Doswell, Graham Dawes & Glen Payne had a tough battle with a xml:namespace prefix = st1 />

. Despite being a few members down Bexhill was back to winning ways. Scoring 6 race wins, 2 seconds, 3 thirds and a host of points scoring places.
Win number one came in the Ladies Senior pairs. Holly Makin and Rachel Garland powered to their maiden senior win in style. With extreme windy conditions requiring all their skills to just finish, they proved all the hard winters training was worth every session. Roll on next week!
The second win came in the Men’s senior pairs; Kieran Cahill & Matt Hellier emulated the ladies in scoring their first senior pairs victory. They went into the turn slightly down but came out level, then powered past in the sprint to the line. Mark Mitchell paired up for the first time with Doug Holderway and managed forth position with Andy Bickers & Darren Mitchell just out of the points in seventh.
The Men’s novice fours of Jasper Beutick, Tony Page, Ash Sutton and James Copper have now secured junior status by getting their second win of the year. It was not all plain sailing though as the race to the line was as close as ever with the crews virtually clashing blades but the sheer determination of the Bexhill crew proved too much for hosts Deal.
Ash Cahill continued his dominance of the Men’s junior sculls with win number four out of four. He was backed up by Phil McCorry in third and Doug Holderway in fifth.
Win 5 went again to Mark Mitchell in the men’s senior sculls. This time club mate Kieran Cahill pushed him all the way finishing in second. Club captain Andy Bickers finished fifth with Chris Doswell in seventh.
Jemma Cropper in her second Ladies single sculls race won in dominant style with over 20 boats lengths back to her nearest competitor. Jemma pushed from the start and lead from start to finish securing Bexhill’s sixth win of the day from fifteen events.
James Copper paired up with Ash Sutton for the first time this year and raced strongly to clinch second place.
Bexhill had two men’s senior fours crews in the final, but such was the fierce competition 3rd and 8th places were the best they could achieve. The ‘A’ crew of Mark Mitchell, Doug Holderway, Matt Hellier, Kieran Cahill and Jes Campbell battled hard with a regular Herne Bay crew but also some German internationals that had been imported which seemed to go against the spirit of the Coastal Amateur Rowing Association.
Bexhill’s Senior Ladies crew of Holly Makin, Rachel Cripps, Rachel Garland, Jemma Cropper had a good row and finished in third position despite an unfavourable outside draw, exposed to much windier and rougher conditions.
Bexhill’s Ladies contingent were down in numbers so a hastily assembled novice four of Hannah Ruddock, Megan Milarski, Brogan Carpenter and Angharad Morgan finished in 4th place which was a great result. The same crew but with Carpenter being replaced by Lauren Moyse went on to score two league points in the higher junior ladies fours.
Bexhill had a crew in the men’s junior senior fours made entirely of novice rowers. Ash Sutton, Tony Page, James Copper, Alex Pepper finished fourth.
Bexhill had a crew in the men’s junior fours again consisting of novice rowers. Ash Sutton, Tony Page, Greg Anderson, Alex Pepper finished sixth in the final scoring another point for the club.
Matt Hellier managed to score a point with sixth place in the men’s novice sculls final.
The Veteran four of Bob Balchin, Paul Dawes, Graham Dawes & Glen Payne scored the final points placing with 6th position
